I've mentioned EasyMini in a few posts recently, but I haven't really taken a moment to describe this new flight computer here on TRF, and figured that people might want to learn a bit more about it.

EasyMini is our entry-level dual-deploy flight computer that sells for $80. It's pretty small at 1.5" x 0.8", but doesn't skimp at all on features:

  • Dual deploy flight computer.
  • Kalman filter to automatically avoid mach-induced premature apogee detection.
  • Configurable apogee delay for use as a backup flight computer, select any number of seconds past apogee.
  • Configurable main altitude.
  • High precision (MS5607) barometric sensor. Accurate to 30000 feet, usable to 100000 feet.
  • On-board data logging at 100 samples per second.
  • 32-bit ARM processor, the NXP LPC11U14.
  • Beeper to monitor flight computer state before launch and report maximum height after landing.
  • Built-in USB connector for configuration and data download. No need to get a special connector or additional components.
  • Supports either a standard Altus Metrum Lithium Polymer battery or any external battery between 4 and 15 volts.
  • Screw terminals for ejection charges, external switch and external battery.
The goal was to make it so that you didn't have to configure it at all to be able to safely fly dual-deploy rockets. Out of the box, it will fire the apogee charge right at apogee and the main charge at about 800 feet above the ground.

We've heard from lots of people looking for something that was easy to use and didn't require an amateur radio license to legally operate, so EasyMini doesn't have a telemetry and RDF radio, and it allows the use of standard 9V batteries instead of requiring a rechargable lithium polymer cell.

Compared with our previous TeleMini product, EasyMini has larger on-board data logging capacity (1MB vs 5kB), a beeper to signal flight computer state on the ground, and screw terminals for the power switch and external battery. I've been flying this as a backup flight computer alongside TeleMetrum and TeleMega; not having a radio means that mounting is quite a bit simpler.

EasyMini is available for sale through the Altus Metrum web store, and through Bay Area Rocketry.
