Would it be too much of a pain at this point to add functionality?

This is just the list of units available, to make sure I don't miss something.

I'll add data and then make the complete list available.

-Kevin

Sticky?

Can you add just THAT functionality?

Later!

I'm working on compiling a list of all the altimeters and timers currently available, as well as things that are close to being released. In addition, I need contact information for the manufacturer (website is fine).

Most of these are all good altimiters and I have flown several of these. However, and I MUST say this,
The Transolve is the WORST altimeter I have ever used!! This is just plain DANGEROUS!
I bought the kit some years ago, built it, checked and double checked. Test flew it in a small rocket
and it worked fine. Test flew a second time and it just fired on the pad, third time worked and fourth just fired on the pad.
Batteries were alkaline top of the line 9V and yes, I was using the recommended switch that came with the kit.
I have seen this one fire charges on the pad on some big rocket too, it was ugly.

For Public Missilse it is the Co-Pilot 2 as an altimeter and the Accufire as a staging timer

and who could ever forget (no longer in business):

Cambridge Avionics
IA-X95 accelerometer based apogee output and two+three stage output
IA-X96 accelerometer based apogee output, altimeter main output and two+three stage output

worked well in my rockets.

-John

These are actually 3 different altimeters:

Altimax G2 Simply (low cost, deployment only, two channels, inspired by the Adept 22)
Altimax G2 Mini (compared to the Simply: adds a PC interface for configuring and data download and the abilty to control servos)
Altimax G2 SD (compared to the Mini: adds an accelerometer, micro SD card support and a third pyro channel)

Reinhard

Reinhard my friend,

just to add to your description: all 3 offer Kalman filters, which is remarquable is such compact units, and the G2SD also delivers 2 servo controls. Both mini and simply altimeters can be operated with an hand held terminal on the field, no need for a pc.

I understood the G2 SD is out of production and a new top of range altimeter is coming, reading from the german rocketry portal.

Denis

Thanks, guys. If someone can confirm whether or not the G2 SD is still available, that would be ideal -- I'm only listing models currently available at this time.

As far as I'm aware, the successor is currently in the early design stages (component selection). There is no statement that G2 SD is out of production so far, so I think it is safe to assume the G2 SD is still available for the time being.

It is still available. I emailed and received a response.

I have though about buying a set to review. I decided not when the RRC3 came out.

Kevin: You could do another one for available GPS units and / or trackers.

That's what I'm trying to work towards.... :)

Okay, I've updated the list. Am I missing anything else?

-Kevin

Troj,
Now what? I am going to buy an altimeter for my first dual deployment rocket. Any suggestions? Do any have GPS and telemtry?
Thanks

The Transolve design needs to have rock solid power feeds along with a non-bounce switch--one of the two were your problem.

I have a couple of P6K and never had a problem with them.
I use screw switches

probably not the best place to post but...

I'm looking to purchase the Jolly Logic Altimeter Two...
does it really stand up to ejection gases well, as advertised?
thx

I don't have the data all tabulated (I've not even had a chance to start, really, to be honest).

If you're after an altimeter with GPS and telemetry, take a look at https://altusmetrum.org/

Looks ike this one can be removed:

Winged Shadow https://www.wingedshadow.com
How High RT

Winged Shadow Systems has discontinued its product line.
We no longer manufacture or sell any products (effective Dec. 31, 2013)

I'd be curious of all the models listed, how many have attitude (tilt) sensing as a safety measure for 2-Stage deployment? Another check box for the final tabulated list?

I think it is safe to say "None." The Tiltometer monitored and calculated enough degrees of freedom to determine this with accuracy and disable a charge firing from an accompanying altimeter. Also Adrian at FW was working in a cheaper version of this at one time. Unfortunately neither is available on the market presently. In the meantime we have approximations from Ravens (and others) on velocity and/or altitude per specified time as a proxy for "it can't be TOO tilted."

Yes, though you should always give it a little protection against getting directly blasted and "cracked" against the nosecone.
Not much stands up to burning embers, but the pressure sensor etc doesn't mind the pressure spike at all.

Hope that helps?

Foam copper pipe insulation works great. It isn't even budged by the ejection g-forces since it's so low in mass:

That reminds me. Since you need to buy a (still very cheap) piece of insulation one heck of a lot longer than you need for this, cut up a bunch of them up (serrated steak knife works great) and give them out at launches to anyone with or planning to get an Estes or Jolly Logic altimeter.

Interesting; I'm a little surprised that the corrosive residue doesn't do damage, but I guess that's the benefit of a fully-sealed unit.
