some parts I ordered online aren't coming in time for a launch so I have to use some parts from a local store. I have a 12volt system with 18 gauge wire. for the pad selector I got rotary switch rated for 30v .3A from radio shack. Will this work or is it possible I can damage the switch during the firings.

it may work for a short while :) or worse, the contacts could "weld" together the first time, making it unsafe.

Auto parts stores carry switches..but not likely rotary ones.
is there a Fry's nearby they might have a switch rated higher

I'm going to jump ahead, "NO" , try 10amp 120v switch, RS has them.

Thanks for the input the order Im waiting for has the 10 amp switches , i just bought some today at RS and will wire in a way I can return when my order arrives. Its amazing the Markup stores like RS , frys and others have on these componentry.

If the rotary switch is connected directly to the pads then, yes this switch will not work. If, however, this switch is connected to the controls of a relay box, then it may work.
