I got these off Ebay for $1.50 apiece. I was going to suspend them in the payload section. I thought the legs would move when the sun hit them, but they just vibrate.

You bought a solar cockroach when there are a gigabillion of them on the planet? I had been just a viewer on this thread until now. I really got to know why you went there. Gotta thing about killing or maybe, disorienting a cockroach?

I certainly have no great love for cockroaches, and wouldn't hesitate to kill them. But the cockroaches out here are tiny, and fortunately, my house is free of them. I know there are huge cockroaches back east, and someone probably sells them. But I prefer a non-living payload for the X-Ray, even though I did launch live cockroaches as a kid.

Yeah, I think they're the perfect size. The ruler is in centimeters.

Looks like a typical south Texas water bug in size and shape.

Buy the 8 ounce size as you'll probably not use it all.

OTOH you never know when they'll stop making it.

Shelf life could be a problem.

Sent from my Galaxy S4 so that's why I misspell things...Forumrunner helps, too.

Then it dawned on me, I didn't need to coat the whole thing with putty, just fill the voids. So I put another, shallower coat of putty on it. It looks like a mess to me. I don't have a good feeling about it.

Even after all that work with the putty, it still has voids in it. Oh well, this is as good as it's going to get. It'll look better once I get the black stripes on it.

I want to paint this with the same scheme as the original. So I need to paint some tapered black stripes on the transition. I printed out some guides to help me mask it, but I've run into a problem. Other than eyeballing it, is there a better way to center the two guides to each other?

I decided to just eyeball it and go for it.

It's certainly far from perfect. But it did turn out better than I expected. I'm happy with it.

Okay, let's get some stripes on this puppy! I wanted the black stripes centered over the fins. So I marked the center of one fin at the top with a length of aluminum angle. Using the stripes on the transition, I marked the locations of the stripes on the body tube. Drew lines with the angle, and masked them. Using a piece of paper wrapped around the body tube as a guide. I masked for the horizontal stripe.

This was one of my more tedious masking jobs. I was glad when I could start spraying paint.

As usual, the Tamiya tape gave me clean lines. Not sure what happened at some of the corners, and not sure I can fix it at this point. Or even want to try. I was able to clean off the black smudge with lighter fluid.

But overall, I'm very pleased with how it's turning out. Considering my past relationship with paint, this could have gone very badly. Tomorrow I'll paint one fin black, in keeping with the original paint theme.

It looks better from a distance.

But thank you for the compliment!

I got a passenger, but he's too big for the payload section. Bummer.

I got a 5" long 1/4" bolt to use with the small stainless eye nut.
