But not what you're thinking, it's all in the cone.

When I told Tim I was making my 5" Jart dual deploy, he offered me a bunch of parts that would have turned it into a 5" Alpha - not in the cards for this one. I'm still debating, but I might even shorten it a bit. Using the K&S modular electronics sled made this easy, it fits in little space. The main chute tube is a carefully smushed piece of 2.6? LOC tube, capped in the back with plywood.

I have been obsessed with nose cone av-bays lately. I ressurected a couple old ones that had to be shortend due to zippers. Love that oval chute tube. Where are you mounting the blastcaps and terminal block? I'm wworking on a 5" NC right now for my Gizmo.

I love the scientific term here :neener:
Seriously, tho, thanks for the pics. I did get the extension kit from Tim today at the (soggy) club launch. I also think I want to put some sort of tether in it as an option.

Since I use this sled in two other rockets, there will be no dedicated charge wiring (to terminal blocks). The lighters will be wired directly to the alt, I haven't decided yet if I'll mount a charge container to the bulkhead for the apogee event. The main will be popped from the bottom of it's tube, I'll most likely just use cardboard tube charges for that.

You'll never see my name in the credits of a technical manual! I never thought of the tether, I need to get one of those one of these days - do you have one?

Nope, not yet, but it's on the list. I need to quit giving my money to Tim and get one. I'm thinking Archtype, but haven't fully decided on a brand yet.

Now surely that work of art does not fit inside JUST the shoulder of the cone now, does it?

Chad,

I like your design (and will prolly copy it) but my only question is, how big of a chute can you stuff in that tube? That Jart needs a pretty big chute to prevent popping a fin or cracking a fillet. The chute I fly mine with would not fit inside that tube.

Thanks,:blush:and no. It does extend into the cone, the tube for the main dictated it's own maximum length - ending just before it hits the taper of the cone.

How big of a chute are you using? I was figuring to use this 58" Top Flight Standard that I have, it fit's comfortably with the bit of cordage it requires. I think I could get a 72" in there if need be, but I'm figuring the 58" to be ok with a (so far) estimated recovery weight around nine pounds.

I forget how small the standard chutes pack. If the 72 will fit, I would use it (I like slow decent) I flew mine with a Ultra X 70".

I'm gonna pull the 70" out of the Minnie Magg tonight and see how it fits. Now the hard part, drilling holes in this beautiful cone - hard to bring myself to do, but nessasary none the less.

I assume you are venting it in the shoulder? A magnetic switch would eliminate the need to drill into the cone (assuming you are drilling a switch access hole?)

Not in the shoulder, but directly above it at the very bottom of the cone. I forgot about those mag switches, that's a good idea. I'll have to mull that over, thanks.

Be careful with putting a vent hole on the cone itself. Baro alt. could have issues with that. I have had luck (with my 5"jart) with the vent hole about 2"down, on the booster, into the shoulder. I flew it with a stratologger and a line cutter a few weeks ago.

I did consider that, here's why i figured it would be ok (please correct me if I'm wrong):
-The bottom couple inches of the cone is strait
-The air doesn't vent directly into the bay. There's a pretty big void between the inside of the cone and the actual location of the bay
If you think there'd still be an issue, I'd certainly heed your advice.

I have had excellent results mounting altimeters in nosecones. Saying that, I have, by design, only used accelerometer-based alts (ARTS2, G-wiz HCX and Raven) for this application. The accel is used for apogee detect and the baro is used for main altitude deploy. I would have reservations using a baro-based detect for apogee with a nosecone sampling vent.

Do you think I'd still have an issue with the specific arrangement that I'm using? I've heard of issues like this, but those situations had direct venting to the bay from a tapered/radiused exterior surface.

Moving on with the fiddly bits, I've installed the main charge holder in the back of the main's tube. Tracker capsule was added as well, all composed of plumbing bits from the hardware store.

Very nice sir.,.

Thanks, definitely a bit busier than the last time you'd seen it. I hope to get it in the air on the 23d, you coming out? How are you coming along on your DD bird?

Looks awesome! Your use of a "smooshed" LOC tube as the main bay is very cool. I rarely think "out of round," so kudos for that great idea!

I'll post pictures of my set up after I put an hour or two into it tonight. My nosecone will be designed to handle a Raven and BRB900, with dual deployment handled by a cable cutter. For the most part, this rocket will fly single deploy with a Mil-surplus 66" chute. Planned first flight is a CTI I800 on Saturday.

As others have stated. Way to think out of the box. The oval tube idea is brilliant. I can guarantee you will see some others use this idea, present company included. Looks like the 23rd is gonna be a big day at the bong.

Please do, I'd like to see your setup. I haven't decided definitively on a motor yet, will depend on the weather.

Thanks for the props Russ, nessasity is always the mother of out-of-round thinking - think that's how it goes... I hope the 23d isn't too busy, I want to do some flyin'!
