One more problem with this.
Darth Vader was NOT in command of the Death Star!
Governor Tarkin was, and he was so confident in the station that he would not order the launch of the Death Stars 1000+ fighters to repel the attack.
Vader used a small group of fighters personally assigned to him, he had no other direct authority over the station.
