Well, the song, Bad came out in 1987. Ghostbusters was 1984, as was I Want a New Drug.
Though I like all three songs, I don't think any of them has a strong or memorable melody. It's the kind of melody that just comes easily to mind. It's so simple, the real trick is making a song out of it that holds up. You have to stress the rhythm to make it work.
Tom Petty recently sued Sam Smith for stealing Won't Back Down. IMHO, it's basically writing a song with no musical idea, and then suing somebody else for doing the same thing. But... that's just MHO. Waddo I know?
