So it's super nice out today and had to have a play with it all

1st this really does support 100KG. I'm currently 91Kg, it hurt my ass but i was able to sit stable and enjoy a drink in the sun (not normaly looking this rough, been working on house and garden).

1st mod, lose the plastic. Less to burn on liftoff

Blast plate has arrived, handle i was able to rip off there and then. This will get cut on the guillotine at work so all them holes are gone.

Testing it' fit and cover, looks good.

Let's measure and see what we can mod and mount options.

So now the above section has been removed time to see what option is on offer.

Still unsure how i want to do this. The latter gives me more rail which is good! I'm thinking i could get a steel plate cut and drilled to bolt on the stand then 3 bolts along the length to hold the rail on.

Blast plate i really like, it's very very well made.

M6 Pan head
Penny washer
M6 wing nut

That holds the blast plate on. Rail is held with the built in clamp and a bit of 25mm thick MDF. Hold my 90KG no problem.

Local camping shop had a peg start set. Rubber mallet, peg puller and 6 8" metal pegs for £5. Grabbed one so I can pin this down.

Nice "MacGyvering"

How much rail do you have left for launch with your current setup?

Thanks
Ed

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for the idea of a jawstand for a base. It is absolutely perfect! I haven't been in model rocketry in about 20 years and wanted to start with something good, which I seen this post about using a jaw stand.

I have done a few mod's to mine. But I have two different blast shields that I can use for it and I dont think any rocket will burn a hole in these plates for many years to come. I can use normal rail, mini rail, and soon to be launch rods.

Anywho enough bad English and more Rocket Porn...

Very nice setup. I just picked mine up and was thinking along the same lines as you for an "all-in-on" unit.
May i ask where you got the "Mini" rail from?

Thanks
Ed

I am pretty sure it was this... https://www.mcmaster.com/#5537T117

Product Detail
Aluminum Metric T-Slotted Framing System, Two-Slot Single Inline, 20 mm Solid Extrusion

I also picked up the 1010 rail at the same time from the same place... also the two-slot style.
The rails showed up nearly next day. I was shocked.

Found it on Ebay at the 80/20 storefront it is the 20 series ,, I will post later today on my progress.
What is that your using as a blast shield and what are the bolts attached to?

Wow that is nice - may have to add one to my launch collection.

Sorry for bringing up a older-than-dirt thread, but I FINALLY got the opportunity to pick up a Rockwell Jawstand. Cost me $107 CDN, but F-it, I want one.

Besides, it doesn't have to be a exclusive rocket launcher. I'm sure it can do double-duty as a chair or a support for.....whatever.

Will post pics when I have the opportunity.

I've read all the other projects here in this thread and it gave me alot of good info. Thanks! :)

Likewise, sorry to bump an old thread but I had picked up an 8 foot 1010 rail from Grainger and was trying to figure out what pad to build around it. Ordered a Jaw Stand from Amazon and I'll have exactly what I wanted for my kids' TARC team (lay the rail down to load the rocket) with very little time spent in the workshop!

Thanks for sharing all the ideas! So happy I stumbled across this, as a tilting launch pad would have been a ton of work AND more costly.

Welcome to "The Club". More ideas in This Thread

I just got a 7 foot 1010 rail from 80/20 and a rk9033 stand off of Amazon. I'm the captain of a TARC team and I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can come up for a launch pad with these!

Thanks a lot for all the ideas!

the standard launch rails for hpr is 1010 or 1515, not the 20 series metric. The rail buttons available will not fit the 2020, 2040, or 2080 rails....if you got the metric ones, return them and get the English sized ones...

Welcome to the club! My daughter's TARC team used the one we built the end of last season and all of this season. I think there are pictures on the other thread linked above, but I slotted and drilled a 2x6 to screw to the rail (screw heads fit in the channel on the "back" of the rail) and the slots slide onto the 3 cross posts in the Jaw Stand.

We nail it to the ground with 12" spikes, and it stays pretty stable. A slow-motion video reveals only a couple degrees of rail deflection at launch, which will hopefully keep altitudes pretty predictable. Time will tell.

EDIT: Best of luck to your TARC team, as well!

Yes. The only way the team could get better stability would be to abandon the Jaw Stand and build something out of 4x4s, an involved project that I can't throw in my truck quite as easily.

I've also launched a LOC Athena (3" x 4.5' HPR) off the Jaw Stand on a G77R. Worked great!

I should have known to come here first when I started to think about something to mount a rail on. I was searching on Home Depot site and found the Rockwell Jaw Stand. I laughed hard when I came across this review posted on the Home Depot site:

I have not seen a JawStand in the big box stores for years.

Even on line, they are no longer available.

I ended up buying an Amazon Basics Speaker Stand after having seen a launch pad setup a local TARC had made. See attached photo. Apparently several of the critical fittings were 3D printed but I didn’t realize that until I already had the speaker stand in my shop and looked at the photo.

Still working on a rail attachment method of my own. Might have to contract out a 3d printed set of clamps...upper and lower telescoping tubes are of slightly different sizes.

Interesting. I picked up a JawStand about 6 weeks ago. Don't recall if it was a orange or blue store. Of course I live in fly over country, probably different stock than elsewhere. Still a reasonable deal for a launch stand base. I'm working on a method that keeps the rocket as close to cg of the stand as possible. Guess we'll see what results. :)

Saw that a few days ago.

Entry says “Out of Stock”.

That led me check the other stores (Walmart, Menards, etc) but no joy.

Thanks for trying to help a brother out.
Hey no worries. :) Hate to extrapolate from slim info, but maybe they were coming out of the Wuhan area. That'll put the brakes on exports.

I am another one who read this old thread. At Menards last week I found one clearance for $64. Now I need to get some kind of rocket ready.
