As a kid, the Phantom interested me for some reason. I never had one.

I know it was meant only as a static display but have any of you ever tried to fly it?

The only way I'd fly mine is inside an airplane, or attached to another rocket with a sealed coupler. Flying it would destroy it as the heat from the gasses would render the clear plastic opaque.

This is my slightly modified Estes Phantom Rocket.

For the modification, I cut away part of the clear plastic fins, and replaced them with thin layers of balsa to give the illusion of wood fins.

Unfortunately, the cut-away engine was lost years ago.

My latest build is a cross between the phantom and a Cherokee D (upscaled to BT-60, zipperless w/baffle)

Used a fluorescent light guard for the body tube, a payload section from an Estes Magician to create the engine mount. Much of the rest is spare parts from Estes or Semroc, except for the fins. I cut the fins out of 1/8" thick sheet acrylic stock that I had. Decals are photocopied (102%) from the Excelsior upscale decals for the Cherokee D, and were printed on clear, self adhesive stock from FedEX (Kinkos).
