Has anyone used this line of paint? How good does it come out and hold up over time?

I've played around a little with the stuff and it has a tendancy to spit when spraying.
I've used it a couple of times,it's decent but never looks like the lid.Try the krylon midnight black metallic or cobalt blue metallic and see what you think.I like it it's different

I have used the Rustoleum Metallic paints many times without issue. The Gold on this rocket is Gold Metallic and the blue is Cobalt Blue Metallic.

I like it for the most part. Multiple light coats on a well prepared (sanded and primered) surface is key. I have had some issues with it losing its "metal" look when I applied clear coat over it.
As Long as he doesn't want a Mirro finished Gold rocket Rustoleum Metallic Gold is some very NICE stuff. I've done several models with it over BLACK Base coats to make the metallic pop! in the sunlight it's a Great sparkler on just about any model. Here are a couple That used this metal flakey "metallic" Rustoleum Gold.
Rustoleum Silver Metallic is also a GREAT metal flake type metallic, one of the best I've used in a long time.
Just to be very clear...there is no Mirrored metallic in the rattle can market that will last. ALL turn very dull with the slightest handling. NONE can be clear coated with anything including Nu-Finish. IF you looking for that kind of finish we have two choices... Paint it and fly it once before it turns to dull grey or gold or Paint it and NEVER touch it with bare hands (White Cotton Museum Gloves) will sort of keep the shine on for awhilWe'll keep looking for new stuff but rattle can mirror coatings outside Alsa Corp $125.00 3 can "Killer Chrome" systems haven't worked so far.

I've used silver and gold once... ok but didn't like finish so didn't repeat.
I've use Blue Metallic numerous times. Works great, good results... half my fleet is Blue Metallic. I use several coats to achieve good finish.
I've tried Red Metallic Rustoleum, work well too but too light red shade for me. I've switched to Dupli-color Metal Specks Red... darker red. Much more expensive/can. The other half of my fleet is Metalic Red.

Is it possible with these paints to wet sand a layer or two to try to get as close to a mirror finish as possible?
I'll admit...I have only temporarily painted stuff in this and ended up repainting in another color.
Oh! If I remember you have to shake these cans to death and keep shaking after every couple light mists or so...sound familiar?
It'll never look like the lid as mentioned before,or Justin Biebers "Liquid Silver" car.
It's not bad paint at all, but it is tricky to apply. It will run easily and a spot where there is a tiny bit too much paint (but not a run) will show up instantly as a big shiny blemish.
I'm currently using it to paint a Leviathan nose cone in copper metallic, then clear coated with Enamel. I have a coat of clear on it now and it only dulled the copper shine by a tiny amount, but in the sun the copper particles glisten and sparkle. Kinda pretty really.
THIS paint by Rustoleum rocks!! I highly recommend:
I used it many times. Great coverage, even spraying and distribution of the metal flakes, and it's friendly to clear coats (I prefer Enamels for this paint). Home Depot sells this. Many colours to choose from.
Plays with wood, cardboard, and carpenters glue at home.
L1 will have to wait until 2013. Oh well.......patience is a lost virtue any-ways...
JStitz:
No wet sanding will not get you any closer to a mirror finish starting with a metallic rattle can paint.
As mentioned in the eariler post, there are really no current "easy" way to chrome or Mirror gold finish anything that will be handled at all.
OBTW:
Justin Biebers Chrome finished Car is covered with one of two Alsa Corp products. Either their "Killer Chrome" Automotive 3part finish or a new Stretchable vinyl permanent Chrome wrap. Both are exceedingly expensive, but do create a true Chrome Mirror finish on whatever substrate they are applied to.
Killer Chrome Rattle can kits may still be available directly from http://alsacorp.com last time I priced the Black Base Coat Chrome color coat & Clear overcoat 3- 12oz can kit is was 125.00 plus shipping. Once you start break the seal mixing the catalyst & paint they must be completely used within 2 hours. I recently ordered a one Sq Ft. sample of the Stretchable Chrome Vinyl for 22.00 bucks with shipping to see how well it would work on covering tubes, fins & nosecones but haven't had a chance to apply it yet.
as I mentioned these things are VERY expensive for hobby use.
Chrome Trim (Adhesived backed) Monokote and a few other Chrome Mirrored vinyls can be used well on fins, tubes and other non-curved surfaces.
Back to the Rustoleum Metallics:
they are really no different then using any other rattle can paint with this exception. MOST Gold and Silver metallic paints will come out MUCH deeper and Brighter if applied over Gloss BLACK base coats rather then white. Why you ask? these "metallics" are really Bronzing powder (gold) or Aluminum powder (Silver) suspended in a clear vehicle. the size of the individual grains of these powders or flakes determine the reflectivity of the dried paint film. As the specks of metal settle in the clear they do not fill all the voids completely ambient light hitting the surface is reflected differently off white, grey or Black base coats underneath. Black create a Deeper more Brillant finish.
Rustoleums Metallics (Silver, Gold, Copper, Blue & Midnight Black) have some of the best "metal flake" effects I've seen in some time.

Yeah I used the gold and it came out pretty nice. Then it started to "tarnish", it now looks more like weathered brass or an old zippo lighter that needs polishing.
The Chrome has actually held up much better, it doesn't look anything like chrome but it's not a bad looking silver.

I too am a very Big fan of Rustoleum Midnight Black Metallic with it's Copper Metal Flake.
Originally bought a can to use as an undercoat for Rustoleums Metallic Silver but liked the Black effect so much ended up Changing all the decals on my Centuri Orion so I could leave the black as the finished top coat. Outstanding flash in the sun...The Picutures just don't do it justice.
An Outstanding Line of Metallics...Hope they don't change the formula anytime soon.

Rustoleum Metallic paints are my favorites also. Easy to use and run resistant. However I wish there were more color selections. Are there any good metallic flake yellows or even whites in rattle cans?
more rockets then cents
+1 for the "tarnishing". I love gold nosecones, but you can tell which ones have flown and which haven't...
Do the rusto metallics lend themselves to decanting? I hate the spray can for applying and usually end up spraying the paint into a jar first so I can spray it with my own equipment.
Would the metal flakes just settle at the bottom of the pain cup while spraying since I can't really shake the spray gun?
Plays with wood, cardboard, and carpenters glue at home.

I have used Duplicolor MetalCast, which is a transparent paint, over the Rustoleum Silver Metallic which gives a metalflake look. The red looks very nice and yellow is available but I haven't used it.
They are both enamels but because they are not the same brand of paint, I usually let the Rustoleum cure for at least 3 weeks before I use the Duplicolor.
You may want to test a sample before committing it to a big project.
One thing I did notice is that the Duplicolor tends to "blush" in high humidity but after fully curing, I can get rid of the cloudy look with a little polishing compound.

I've used this Rust-oleum Metallic Silver & Bronze several times, with excellent results. I did do a lot of prepping, 3 or four coats of Kilz sandable primer, wet sanding between each coat 220-400 grit, until the surface was baby skin smooth. Then three light coats of Metallic. First coat was wet sanded with 600 grit, second coat wet sanded with 1500 grit. Last coat was not sanded. Let the paint cure for about seven days, the apply two coats of Pledge Future & Simple Green.
I've flown these rockets several times in the past four months and none of the colors have flattened or dulled and I've had my hands all over them.

I've not used a metallic paint on any rockets yet (though I currently have a can of Rustoleum Metallic Gold in my closet for my next project), but I have generally been a really big fan of the entire Rustoleum brand. It's really easy to apply, it applies an even, solid color (doesn't run as much as other brands, probably because of the spray rate), and it looks fantastic. And from some of the pictures above, looks like choosing to stick with Rustoleum for the metallic gold was a good choice.
