    DIGITAL Nike Smoke

Here`s something completely different from the shops of the "Brothers T" ,this time from my younger bro "Sodbuster" ,who is also into HP rocketry.

This is the MadCow 4" fiberglass Nike Smoke with 54mm MMT and Aeropack flanged retainer. This is another great kit by this manufac. ,the parts were well made and no flaws in the glass.

For something different,Sodbuster decided on a 3 color digital camo look ,as I already have a Nike Smoke in the usual colors.

I have more pics to post ,these were taken outside and some taken in the rocket shop.

    Cheers

OK ,first off ,I see I posted the thread as Gigital instead of Digital........so that`s fixed (idiot)

Sorry for the lack of info ,I had burgers on the grill so time was short ,but they sure were good !!!!

Anyway ,a friend of ours does graphic dipping ,you know the kind like you see gunstocks ,crossbows etc. in camo patterns. His father and himself travelled to the US (not sure what state ,in the South)and bought the setup and trucked it back up here.In short ,it`s a big deep stainless tank ,filled with water ,you lay down the film with the pattern on it (there are hundreds of patterns available) spray some type of solvent on it ,the film melts and the ink remains on the surface of the water. You then dip the object into the ink and voila !

Of course it is much more complex than that ,as the part needs to be prepped ,the object has to be dipped a certain way ,a base coat is sprayed on beforehand and a top coat after etc.

He told us that fiberglass is wonderful to work with ,he can even do woods ,but card/kraft tube is a no no. I`ve seen his work ,it just blows my mind what can be done with this process ,it`s just not cheap ,but very cool.

My brother wants to do his fiberglass DX3 and i want to get a gunstock done.He did a friend of ours who has a quad 4x4 front cowling in a carbon fiber pattern.....looks wild.

I have a few more pics

    Cheers

I remember an episode of Orange County Choppers showed this process on a bike they were building. Very cool!
    The process is continuous...

I hope you do not take a liking to Woodland Digital (MARPAT). That stuff is like a cloaking pattern when you get near a wooded area... even just lying on the ground.

Awesome rocket! I think this may provide enough motivation for me to finally do a digital camo rocket myself, though I'd have to use different techniques.
I just hope you can find it; that paint scheme looks a lot like the ground in some of the pictures of Canada I've seen!

Don't think you want to fly this in the desert. Beautiful, though. I'd make sure you'd have a good radio transmitter, and a loud sonic beacon.

Care to share how much this cost? I seen DIY kits online for about $100 bucks but what if you mess it up.

I beleive it cost him $200 ,but there is a lot of prep work involved. The rocket was base coated with automotive paint and then clear coated afterward. My friend who does this work told me there is quite a learning curve to get it right. The film itself is also quite expensive.

    A few more pics.

    Cheers

I do not think I could fly a $200 paint job. This is a beautiful rocket.

That is sweet! I'd be afraid to launch it with a $200 paint job! I suppose that's what the clear coat is for - if you bang it up bad enough to get to the paint you're not doing it right. I'm building the same kit (just started attaching the fins). All fiberglass - it feels like a tank once it starts going together.

I am just stunned at how cool that is.

If you would have told me conceptually what you were going to do, I would have thought "Ok, if that works for you". What a disconnect from concept to reality!

It is really is one of a kind. Just gorgeous.

    Thanks for posting more picks!

I'd rather fly it in a desert than tall grass, that's for sure!

Thanks for the replies ,I shall forward them to the fellas !

But indeed ,I was also blown away when i saw it ,pics just don`t do it justice. The cool thing is ,there are hundreds of patterns you can choose from ,just not cheap is all !!

I must say ,the finish automotive clear coat is very very durable ,this one gloss but satin or flat is also an option.

    Cheers
