    New NAR card

Just got a new/replacement/upgraded card from NAR in the mail.

Nice. MUCH better than the old/existing one (which was pretty crappy quite honestly).
    Thanks, NAR types!

For those who have not recieved one yet they are hard plastic like a credit card; same size as a creidt card too. As has been said, a big improvement over the old flimsy ones.

Sounds like they went to something similar to what Tripoli uses.

Nope. Lighter weight material (not by much, but a bit), and while NAR's are run through a laser printer, the Tripoli cards are produced on a card printer.

The two are not compatible, in terms of how information is put on them.

That said, they're nice cards, and a nice upgrade from the previous format (though the previous format worked just fine).

Well the Tripoli cards don't hold up well to sunlight, where as the old paper NAR cards don't sunfade at all. I may have to start carrying these things in my wallet.

Interesting; I've never left mine in sunlight. I do know that the film will rub off if you put it somewhere where something rubs on it all the time.

Do the current Tripoli cards have that problem? Tripoli bought a new card printer that uses a slightly different process a couple years ago.

Yeah, just got mine yesterday. good looking card. Much better than the old one. Will continue to carry the old one as well - just in case. My memory is the second shortest thing I have, after all.

Yep, I carry my cards in a lanyard protector which I wear around my neck at launches, Tripoli on one side NAR on the other. After about a year the Tripoli card has faded pretty badly. I do sometimes leave the lanyard hanging from my car mirror though which is when it get most of its exposure to the sun. Like I said, I may need to start carrying these in my wallet.

Don't get it near any liquid - I'm not certain what he hit it with, but someone was showing his off today with all of the information wiped off of the card. I'll put a piece of packing tape over mine, just like the old one.

Now there's a thought! It would be pretty neat if you could have your own rocket or avatar on your NAR membership card. How hard could it be? Just a matter of emailing them a jpeg. If they could do that, I'd be willing to add $8 more for the effort and make it an even $70 for membership. With 5000+ members it might even be a decent fund raiser for NAR.

The biggest problem with that is picking which rocket to showcase. Not a problem for Verna, I suspect.

Looking at the card material, and the printing on it, this isn't possible -- the cards come pre-printed with everything except your name, member number, expiration date, local club and cert level. Lightly run your fingernail over the card, and you can feel where the print is.

You know, actually, my new NAR card does have the rocket I would use at that, it just doesn't have the nose art on it. but at that scale, you couldn't really see it anyway. Still, I do think it would be great if everyone could have their personal favorite on their card.

Switching to the current cards away from paper is welcome. Next year, when I get my next one, I will use this year's card to mix epoxy or some such building task.

I do believe that switching further, to a process (oursourced of course) that allows individual avatar inclusion, would be cool. I would pay a premium for it if I knew that NAR was getting a percentage of the extra cost as a fundraiser.

    Tripoli does that.

The upside is members can customize their card. The downside is that it requires a more expensive printer.
