Every time I see a conical lamp shade, I see an odd-roc. They come with metal motor mounts at the top for easy high CG location.
Google is saying very little about this idea. I wonder if people have done this, and with what results.
Ari.

I recall that somebody glassed one and turned it into a saucer...
They fly very well. I have built a couple. The hard thing is deciding how to put the motor tube in it. Just pick one with a low amount of metal.

My rockets usually fly naked. If they survive, they earn their paint.
Come fly with ROSCO or ICBM in Orangeburg SC => http://rocketrysouthcarolina.com
Cool! I might do one for an upcoming launch.
Ari.
This spring I built a lampshade rocket for the low n' slow drag race at Thunderstruck. Basically a standard 4" rocket with a lamp shade at the base. RandyL made a nice video and posted it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaCwg...ature=youtu.be

Mark @ Stickershock has a great lamp shade rocket. When he gets back up and running I am sure he will post some pictures! It is way cool....
Of course they have!
Actually one of the guys I fly with converted the entire floor lamp stand to act as the launcher. The Spanish Styled Rough Iron with Black iron hex sided shade with red transluscent panels lights up with Red LEDS for night flying.
flys on G's which just about blinds everyone for an instant at ignitions..
Very Very KEWL flights. Sorry Only pics I have are white light steaks.

I used a lamp shade to contruct a nose cone for my Heavy Metal Thunder (a name Dick Stafford stole from me long before I thought of it!).
You can read about the unfinished rocket at PayloadBay.com.
I mentioned the nose cone in a thread at Rocketry Planet (which has more photos of the magnificent lamp shade nose cone). "Bone Daddy" was inspired by the idea to create a smaller nose cone from a paper transition and a ping pong ball. As a kid, I used ping pong balls as cheap nose cones for my "made from trash" rockets, but I just glued a coupler to them. It never occurred to me to use a transition to make it look like a real nose cone.
Oh, and, as an aside, check out The Lamp.

Here is a link to a video of David Jarkey's Lampshade drag racing my Hat Of Death. David's shade launched off the original wrought iron body (although only the shade part flew). I hope the link works for you. My computer is FUBAR and won't play it. http://www.mdra-archive.org/photos/E...djdragrace.wmv
There are other photos of the Lampshade in the main album http://www.mdra-archive.org/photos/ESL99/

Exactly! There have been outhouses and Large R2-D2 drink coolers flying for years!.....lampshade drag race anyone?
The cool thing here is the number of sizes and types of lamp shades out there...everything from "B" to "M" motors.
Ari..we wanna see your build.
Has anyone ever staged lamp shades before?![]()

Mark,if it's the 24"x4' someone has flown theirs on K-1100's for several LDRS flights.Lexan fins I think.
Actually, with your decal resources..you could do another Star Wars service droid...like one of the flat cone droids.(grungy titanium look?)

That's what ALL the wives hate..if only their husbands could be hooked on something cheap like Japanese porno.....
NOT another "No one has done it LDRS projects"
ODD-Rocs on steroids cost big $$ in the end..
That's hard core![]()
I was wondering if anyone has upscaled the break-away to 3"
iter is about..by now.
I can't help it,I thought about doing a 3 or 4" "Break-Away with Jamaican flag colors back in March.![]()
How about a 5.5" diameter Breakaway?
It doesn't seem all that long ago to me, but I started building the YouBee ("Upscale Breakaway") around the time Ari's daughter was born. :-)

Roger, your YouBee is the inspiration for me to buy a breakaway for Leah!
I have a 3" Onyx (a "daddy" rocket) that's sitting in the corner begging for more sections a-la YouBee :=)
