New Scratch Build, First Mid Power Rocket!

Im mad at you guys... Every build is getting bigger and more complicated, And now my first rocket that can only fly on composite motors!

3.00" LOC tube and nose cone, standing 46" tall and weighing right now 15.4 ounces empty. It only has a 24mm motor mount, I dont want to go to high. First flight will be on an AT E20-4w engine, soon.

I still need to put in a shock cord and chute, and then paint it! with flames! How? I dont know right now... any tips?
What type of shock cord should I use? How long? This is one of my first rockets that dont use a rubber band shock cord, so Im a newbie here.

Last pic is it with another tube, making it 6'7'' and and around 24 ounces...

Cool looking design! Is that 15.4 ounces including the motor mount, parachute, and shock cord? Pretty light for such a large rocket. For the short version, I'd probably go at least 12 feet on the shock cord, and 20-24 feet on the long version. And I definitely would have gone with a 29mm motor mount. I ran a quick sim in Thrustcurve, and it's saying 726 feet for the short version with an F39, and only 480 feet for the long version. With a 29mm mount, you could have flown it on G's. But what's done is done, it'll definitely be low and slow, which I like!

Oh, and just to warn you, scratch building MPR's for composite motors is very addicting! It's too late for you now!

That does look pretty big, good thing CTI has those 24mm G's now for the extended configuration... Great looking rocket!

That's true, I didn't think about Cesaroni Pro24 motors. How long is your motor mount? You could throw it up there on a 6 grain G100 Skidmark!

    Thanks for the comments!

Right now its in primer. It has no shock cord or chute yet, thats the only thing its missing.

I have no engine block or hook in it, so it can take any 24mm we got! The only problem/limit is the 24mm tube is an estes tube, so ejection charges on big composites might damage it after awhile...

Im wondering if theres a way to go back and forth from small to large configs.

    Mucho Cool!

I've heard some rockets with split fins like that whistle on their way up. Lemme know!

Does your onsite vendor sell CTI motors?

If you had put a 29mm motor mount in it, you could have used a 29mm-24mm adapter. Can't adapt up, unfortunately.

I haven't been able to figure out why some rockets whistle. I've heard simple 3FNC's on 18mm black powder motors whistle, and I've heard large HPR's with split fins whistle. I don't think it's the fins, but I really don't know for sure.

I fly by myself (and family) at local baseball fields. I would love to go to an actual club, but have little time....
The place is good for rocket heights of around 600 feet, higher than that and it gets risky. Buy my friend said he has a 10 acre lot, So I want to see how big that really is before I get to larger(29mm) powered rockets.

Does CTI make single use engines?

The club experience is worth the time and effort to me. Flying with clubs took the hobby to unbeknownst heights (no pun intended) for me. I never knew it could be this much fun! And overall, rocketry people are some of the nicest I've ever met.

CTI doesn't make single use motors that I know of.

    UPDATE:
I started painting her. 2 coats of white primer, then I hand painted the yellow and red...

I think the flames will look pretty good for my first try!

Tomorrow, I will add some orange/ yellow to the tips of the flames with an airbrush.

With all this paint, we have gained an ounce! With a used E20 inside and no chute/shock cord, it is 17.4 ounces, Im starting to push the limits of an E20, But my estes Saturn V flew perfect weighing that much....

More in the next day or so.

Ok, I think its almost done!

For my first time, I think the flames came out pretty good.

I used my airbrush and did a little orange around whole edge, and a little yellow on the tips.

I like it! If it were me, I would paint the bottom corner of the tip edge on the fins red, to sort of balance out the red on the upper BT and nose cone... but that't just my personal preference.
I don't know where you are in Florida, but if you're in the area, I'd love to see you fly some of your stuff at TTRA. (Map: http://ttra.ws/index.php?option=com_...pper&Itemid=10)

Very true, so long as you stay away from the topics of glue and the correct term for motor failures.

I finished painting, I added some detail on the flames. It looks quite good in person.

I also added around 10-11' of 1/8 Kevlar shock cord. Now I just need a chute... This might be a little to big for a garbage bag chute.

I might post some random pics of the fins, shock cord, motor retainer, ect.
