Just curious...Has anyone ever built and flown a gunstar? I imagine it would be a huge challenge. Kind of a cross between a saucer and a rocket.

It looks doable and would be a cool build but I would have no idea where to start. I would think that vac-u-formed parts would help with some of the detail and weight though.

Imagine a failed deathblossom. Call it a "Deathblossom Shred." Sounds like a term we should use in rocketry for a rocket that goes wildly out of control about 2,000 feet up.
As far as building it goes, if we could keep the weight of the cockpit down and concentrate more weight into the thrusters, then fly with a single engine in the center (probably a 54MM tube capable of handling up to a 3-grain CTI) it would probably act like a saucer. Then at apogee, fire 4 strategically placed C6-5's firing in different directions so to set it spinning both in pitch and roll. The tumbling effect would slow the descent speed.
I know both TRA and NAR frown on this, but at the same time you fire the C6-5's, you also ignite several bottle rockets. There's your death blossom.
Then set off another deployment charge at 600-700', pop off the gunner's chair section of the cockpit, deploy a chute, and you have a good chance of it landing straight up.
