ULTIMATE Primer for Covering Old Paint???

Have a Thunderbolt 38 that I originally painted with Testors Enamel. Got ready to refinish it by a good sanding to scuff things up, but on the first application of Rustoleum Primer, I got a HORRIBLE case of the crazing! Oh well, let dry completely, then sand the CRAP out of it...many places down to the cardboard. Of course, the areas where the cardboard is exposed primed fine...yet anywhere there was even a remnant of the old Testors Enamel..neither Rusto or Krylon will touch it.

Is there a better primer for cornering up such coatings without having to painstakingly remove every single trace of the original?

Not really any other primers I know off that won't cause the same effect--best bet---get a good quality sandable primer--spray on two or three dry coats and let sit for 24 hr and then recoat as normal, just don't load up your coats as they will rewet the underlying areas. Another trick---and I used this this week for the same reason. Get your hands on some valspar clear matt--spray a couple light coats and let dry for about an hour, then recoat with one good coat. The paint should'nt cook under it since it drys --LIKE RIGHT NOW-- Do it outside --in the sun is even better---after it sets up you can prime right over it ! One more thing---I KNOW I'M LONG WINDED--When you sand down the wrinkles, just try to knock the high spots off and don't worry so much with the tiny===worm tracks=== Let the sandable primer take care of that for you --hope it helps---H

    Hey Hornet!

Thanks for the tips, but I *MAY* have found something that'll save the day for (all) of us.

I picked up a can of DupliColor Primer/Sealer today at the auto parts store. Quick test did well, but I won't claim success until I have re-finished the rocket including clear coat

I have learned my lesson. I never put primer over paint as it always seems to react badly. I just use the final paint over the old paint which seems to work much better overall.

You might also try some KILZ. When I was a contractor, I could use KILZ to cover just about anything. Then sand it down, put my other primers over it and then finish it. Lacquers frequently have strange effects with other paints.

I was also going to suggest KILZ for the same reason - it's sold as a "this will cover anything" primer.....

How well does KILZ work on nosecones? I've had so-so luck with first using a plastic primer (for adhesion) and then using a few coats of high build primer between sanding coats. But if I can find something that works better..... haven't tried KILZ yet, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Since its oil based, how well do enamel paints stick to it?? Krylon in particular.
