    I almost failed my L1 cert because of the 29mm HPR o-Rings. In fairness I had never flown that style case (29mm HPR) before, I had only used the 29mm Hobby case. I was a bit confused and asked a nearby L3 about it and he mistakenly gave me the wrong advice. I noticed the nozzle was not perfectly straight and got another flyer (L2) to help and he and I discovered the error and I reassembled the motor. From then on I have always checked how tightly the nozzle is seated in my AT loads - if you reverse the o-rings it generally will not seat correctly and there is some "wiggle room" which you can feel.

    It's not that confusing if that's all you fly - but when you fly the hobby 29/40-120 case, the 29mm HPR line, and the 38mm HPR line only infrequently - you can get a little befuddled because none of these has the same "rules" for the o-ring relative sizes. They are consistent across reloads (thank goodness) and they are reasonably easy to get used to. Honestly we are all bad about not reading directions fully - doing that typically solves the issue. I don't recommend the laminated templates - the instructions are subject to change and following the templates is too seductive and you're likely to not know that the instructions have changed if they have.

    Also for the tight ejection wells in the fwd closures - peel the glassine layer of the RDK and then use scotch tape or other cellophane tape to get the right fit. Also - check someone else's closures - your's may be tighter than normal tolerance. My experience is that they are typically just right or loose.

    If the rocket was the right size for you a week ago, it is still today. So I would replace the rocket with a similar kit and get back in where you left off. If you want something a tad bigger, I suggest the formula 75 as it will get you all the way through level 1.

    No thanks. I have the bits and pieces left from my own CATOs. I don't need more.

    I have done this before and have casings to prove it. Good luck in the future.

    @unclevanya:

    My school has something like 25 Aerotech (actually, most are Rouse-Tech and a few Dr. Rocket) 29mm HPR forward closures, and every single one is a pain in the butt.

    Just in case anybody is curious. I decided to stash the usable parts (nc, coupler, fins) under my utility sink and build a brand new 4" PML Endevour. I did paint some of it orange out of respect for the old rocket.

    I did change a few things though - used longer 54mm motor mount without the CPR thing, cut it above the fin can for zipperless, and installed an av-bay in the middle for dual deployment. I plan on flying it a few times at airfest.

    Here's my flight plan to L2...

    I picked up an Adept22 to do dual deploy.

    First flight on H128. Sims to 575 ft. Use motor deploy for main and altimeter deploy a drogue at apogee -150ft.

    Then I366 to 2700ft with motor deploy of drogue and altimeter deploy main @600ft.

    Repeat with J350 to 3800!

    Now to figure out question 42...

    Kevin, I can't wait to see it fly. Make sure and come see me at AIRFest.

    As for the THOR bunch? They are some of the best people I have been around. They really make you feel at home. I buried my L2 scratch built THOR at THOR. They were all great about it and someone had another motor there for my to do a second attempt on another one of my rockets. That one made it and I certified L2.

    I would like to rebuild my THOR and launch it at BOB this year. Maybe I won't bring back a second core sample of Nebraska dirt this time.

    I flew it today at Airfest on a CIT J410 for my L2. Not a perfect flight since the main slipped out at apogee, but it was better than the alternative of no main! Flew to 3700 feet which was spot on as predicted by OpenRocket.
