    Latest E(vil)bay hmmmm....

Stumbled upon an interesting E(vil)bay listing.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/lot-4-Model-...item19d1fadcb7

Could be a very interesting score for someone from Kentucky, no?

Wonder what the story on these is?

Any clubs in that area? I'd buy it and arrange to have them trucked by various third parties...
It will be interesting to see what this goes for ultimately.

    Great win there!!

I am sure that there were a few people on here who were looking for 'local people' to pull strings with.

Give us some more photos of the 5.5 when you get it, it looks nice!

Any idiot can ask ANYTHING they want for anything they can put up on Ebay... doesn't mean they'll actually GET it though! I watch "Pawn Stars" and it's amazing how often he has to remind people of that fact! LOL Of course, there's one born every minute, so who knows... maybe they'll get lucky and find a "sucker" willing to shell out that much for something like that...

It happens all the time at regular live auctions as well... and practically any retail sales venue... how many people who are ignorant buyers get suckered at gun shows and such?? I've seen my share of idiots at the farm auctions too...

I'd bet it's even worse in a live auction setting, not really having a chance to think things through. I bet auction houses make most of their money because of it.

Yeah.. seen it before! People buying 'names' instead of 'deals'. ie two used tractors, both 29hp, both with buckets, etc.; John Deere=$8500, Kubota=$3500; I bought the Kubota and although it needs work every so often, its 'maintenance' and it STILL hasnt cost me as much as the John Deere would have!
or when Winchester sold to FN, the price of a second hand Winnie went through the roof and people were buying them up like mad. Look today, and you can get that 1876 for $$$ instead of $$$$$$$$$

It CAN be... the main thing is being an INFORMED buyer... nothing beats a little homework to make sure you don't get taken... I used to go to the farm equipment auctions fairly frequently. Bought a few "big ticket" (for me) items and some smaller ones. Never really got "taken", got some deals that were better than others. Secret is to know when to walk away. I watched quite a few before I actually started bidding on stuff too. I'd always go CAREFULLY INSPECT the items I was considering bidding on, making note of all the repairs needed before I decided how much I'd pay, based on typical dealer prices on used equipment, less about a third, or half the price of a new machine, minus whatever repair expenses needed to be made. That put you in a good starting point. Demand and supply of course plays a big part in the going price for stuff as well-- some stuff that other folks considered too "old and obsolete" were perfectly suitable for my needs, and thus could be had at bargain basement prices. Once I had a price I was willing to pay in mind, the rest was "play it by ear" during the auction. If whatever I was looking at was going for "stupid prices" I'd walk away. Sometimes I was a little low in my thinking and realized it, and would go beyond what I figured by maybe up to 20% if I thought it was worth it... but it's about knowing what things are TRULY worth paying for, and what you can get for about the same money (or less) from a dealer or independent seller in ready to go condition. One day I was loading up some parts and a pickup parked next to me, and the wife was NOT happy, and told her husband in *that tone* (which will make ANY married man cringe, because he KNOWS he's in the doghouse now!) "just load the thing up already and lets go". He had *that look* on his face too, knowing he'd stepped in it, and mama wasn't gonna let him forget it anytime soon, either. He had overbid on a HEAVILY USED whirlybird seeder/spreader (used enough to wear all the paint off the inside of the tub!) and it wasn't even a good "name brand" spreader... it was an "el cheapo" TSC spreader-- the kind you CANNOT get parts for, and when it breaks, it's scrap metal... turns out he bid and won-- but got into a "peeing match" with someone else and overbid, and ended up paying as much for it as the same spreader cost NEW from TSC... had it been a good USED one from a major manufacturer, he'd have come out okay, but for the el cheapo one, well... not so much!

Thing is, you can't be TOO careful about pulling the trigger on stuff, either. I've seen stuff that I would have LOVED to have bought, but figured would go for BIG BUCKS because they're in high demand or new ones are VERY expensive and thus bring a premium due to few used ones hitting the market. There was a bermuda king sprigger planter machine that I was pretty sure would go for upwards of $4,000, which was well out of my price range... imagine my shock when bidding started at $900 and it sold within seconds for $1,200... DANG I missed the boat on that one!! Before I realized what was really going on, BAM it was SOLD!

One time there was a grain drill that had two new car tires mounted on it. The rest of the machine was in pretty poor shape, and I really wasn't interested. The opening bid was $100-- no takers. The auctioneer dropped it to $50, no takers... Finally he opened the bid at $1... I bid instantly, because the two new 15 inch car tires were worth about $80-100.... suddenly because *I* showed some interest, some other guys jumped in too... bidding jumped up to $2, $5, $10, then $15... I bid $20 and everybody had had enough, and I won it. Loaded it up, hauled it home, debated fixing it, but judged it more trouble than it was worth... took the tires off to use on farm equipment or a trailer at home, and then loaded the drill up and hauled it for scrap iron.. got $25 for the scrap iron, so the tires were free...

Sometimes you have to think on your feet!

    Later! OL JR
