    PML MR 1 Question

Maybe one of you has built this so I'm throwing out there. I just bought one of these, expecting one for a 29mm motor mount and wound up with a 38mm mount instead. I'm dealing with the vendor to resolve this but it raised a few questions. 1st off, the fin slots were 1/16" longer than the fins. Is this normal? My DX 3 fins fit the slots like a glove so I expected the same with this one. 2nd, since the fins were designed to fit a 38mm motor mount, shouldn't the fin tangs be longer to fit a 29mm mount? If they send me a 29mm motor mount replacement it may cause the tube slots to be even longer than they are now. I'm wondering if I should have them just replace the whole kit. Besides, one of the fin slots was crudely cut as if someone did it with a hand held jig saw.

Or, you could just build it and use an adapter for 29mm motors when you fly. That would leave the 38mm in place for future expansion.... Doesn't solve the shoddy workmanship of the kit though. (Just something to think about)

I already considered that option but the kit seems to be poorly manufactured. I know it's not the vendor's fault and he emailed me late last night saying he would be contacting PML today and it's likely he'll be replacing the whole kit. Guess I'll go box this one up and be ready to send it back.

The 38mm version is much more flexible than the 29mm version. Get your vendor to replace it 1:1. As noted you can use an adapter and the MR! is really great on the 1 grain 38mm motors.

I'm just now getting my feet wet in the mid power builds and really not ready to adapt to hi power. In fact I'm only 1/2 way through my first mid power rocket build. I have no equipment for 38mm and I'm really not ready for it. I'd prefer to get mid power rocketry under my belt before jumping ahead so quickly.

That's pretty much the attitude I had when I built my MR-1. Another consideration was the fields I usually had available. Looking back, I wish I had gone with the 38mm for versatility but that is a minor regret.

I am sorry about the quality of yours. I remember mine going together pretty well. The only issue I have had is keeping the piston sanded so that it slides well. It took me a while to figure out how tight the optimal fit is.

I'm sure I'll figure all that out also. Kyle at CDI has already got the ball rolling on the replacement..no questions asked. We're going to swap kits as he already ordered me another one. All shipping is being handled by them and I will say this...there is great customer service at this site. Shannon is totally delightful to talk to and Kyle is the go to guy for all inside info. Great bunch o folks. Can't wait to get started with this build. Here's the link.

What exactly was the problem with your kit?

Ive been doing rockets since January and I remember thinking that and my first scratch build has a MMT that can be changed to as big as a 54 MMT and by god Im glad I did it other wise the rocket which is a meter long and 3" dia would be stuck to a certain limit of motor. The advice which I got was on here and flexability is the name of the game good luck with everything Gary. Up till now shes flown on a G80 but I think it might be getting a 38 motor in it yet LoL

I don't get to launch very much because I'm in the middle of nowhere and really nowhere to launch. The school yard will allow me the use of a C motor at best. The Freedom Launch in Orangeburg SC is the only place I could launch bigger rockets. Not very convenient and I only get to go once a year. Building these rockets means they won't get to fly very often so I'm really not that ambitious to build that far up. For the moment, I'd prefer to launch rockets that don't require electronics and such because all that gets pricier than I prefer to invest. And before someone sounds off about the ROCC group here in NC....let's just say...NOT!
