OK, I've been an Aerotech guy my entire run from low/mid to lvl2. I made the mistake of trying a Cesaroni and am converted.
Who is the wind chime guy that takes Aerotech cases in exchange? Is this a myth?

Robert DeHate (Spelling?). He lives in New England somewhere. He will take your AT casing and give you the equivalent CTI case for free. He then proceeds to (shudders) drill holes in the cases, so they can't be used ever again!

Considering AT/Rousetech motor cases cost something like three times what the equivalent CTI cases do, that hardly seems like a fair trade. Doubly so since most of my AT stuff is Dr Rocket stuff that is no longer being produced, I can't see doing this, even if I didn't want to fly AT anymore.

While the chimes do appear to be Dr. Rocket, most of what was in the trade bucket was rouse tech.
Rob with amw-prox is the dealer at mdra launches, and if you wanted to buy and fly it is well worth the trade. They offer great service and are willing to go above and beyond what is necessary as a vendor and a business.
I have nothing but good things to say about them.
Have I taken them up on that offer? No, but I certainly appreciate them actually having it in the first place.
And if you are paying 3times the cost of a cti motor for the equivalent at/rt motor, then you are getting taken for a ride...

I'm usually left holding the bag. If I got a Right bag, maybe it would be better.
Why is it a launch lug? They are usually too small to carry your rocket to the pad with.
Why do I need an altimeter that talks back to me? I can get that at home.

Considering the reload cost, the cost difference of the hardware is made up very quickly on small motors. As well as AT type hardware holds its value, to destroy it is just plain stupid. When Aerotech got word of the "CTI Trade Program" a couple years back, they were none too happy with some of their dealers and I've heard ultimatums were given.

I don't get this whole trade in your motors gig. The only motors I ever got rid of were two AMW 38mm cases as I was not into EX and there was no real supply left of the reloads. Other than that If I did not lose it in a rocket, I have every case I have ever bought - and that includes an Ellis Mountain case I keep for sentimental reasons.
I always have the flexibility to fly anything I can get my grubby mitts on.
I guess I am an equal opportunity pyro-whore.
Availability is why they do it. At mdra, at least, amw-prox is consistently there. An at vendor makes it occasionally, but if you want a motor that day, then it will usually have to be a cti load.
Rob and Gloria can save you a bit of money if you didn't want to buy more cases outright.
Ps. Wildman has rt cases at about 2x the price of cti hardware.

Raw toast is an excellent alternative to bread.
I also have cases from a few manufacturers, but CTI is what is handy, and I find myself flying CTI loads most often for a couple reasons, mainly because they are the vendor that shows up to my local launches most often, and because of the ease of use that CTI offers.
To me this seems like a good offer for those who find themselves flying mostly CTI, and their other hardware has just become, for lack of a lesser term, decoration.

So you are saying a manufacturer TOLD his Dealers What they have to carry and sell??
If someone told me what I had to sell. I'd tell them to take a flying leap. I am not your puppet. I do what I want and I do what my customers like, not what you (the manufacturer) thinks is best for me. Why? Because a Manufacturer is out for thier own good. their job is to make money.. My job is to take care of my customers and give them what they want.
When you get Spam e-mails for places offering Viagra and other BS like that, do you do it just because they tell you thats what you need to do?? I doubt it (well at least for most of us)... pretty much the came thing..
Mt suggestion is Do what you want, fly what you want and do it because you want to, not because someone tells you to. even if that means you take a loss on one end... if you are happy doing it... DO IT.
Heck I get more compliments on my black and red wind chimes from my neighbors and friends than I care to remember.. they sound so soothing and look cool too.![]()

No matter how much you push the envelope.
it'll still be stationery.
I like the flexibility the AT clone cases give me. I can buy a 75 or 98mm CTI or AT reload and throw it in the hardware I have. It doesn't go the other way. I understand specifically buying CTI hardware in the smaller sizes, but paying extra for Rouse-Tech 75 and 98mm harware just makes sense.
By the way, watched a flight last weekend on a CTI V-max G motor. The flier somehow forgot to thread the case onto the reload, so when he pushed the button, the case shot through the rocket, shredding the fin can in the process. The video shows how nicely the naked fiberglass lights up when you shoot fire through it. Supposed to be an idiot-proof reload design. Guess not

Yeah, Ken's not an idiot. He was LD for the launch and was just distracted. So busy trying to rush through, he forgot to take care of the simple, obvious stuff.
Last year, my son's Junior L1 project was on the pad, getting counted down when I suddenly remembered that I forgot to put the ejection charge into the wellManaged to get the countdown stopped and sheepishly went out to pull the rocket off the pad and fix my stupid mistake. So used to flying with electronics that it didn't occur to me to worry about what was on the other end of the motor. DUH!
This is just my
AT 38/720 hardware $90
10 J420R loads @ $49.99 = $499.90
Total $499.90 + $90 = $589.90*
CTI pro-38 6 grain hardware $57.15
10 J410 red loads @ $62.95 = $629.50
Total $629.50 + $57.15 = $686.65* (That's 2 more loads for my 720 short of 3 bucks)
*Prices are from 2 different vendors but you see my point.
I don't mind getting my hands dirty building a motor, heck I find that's half the fun of flying.Whats the challenge of dropping in a reload and screwing on a cap?Of course this is just my opinion and it has a value of about the same as a grocery store coupon.
I have a brand new CTI 29 starter set that I most likely will never fly....who has NEW AT equivalent hardware that wants to trade straight up,I'll pay shipping!!
Anyone switching to CTI I'll buy your AT hardware for what you paid for your CTI + shipping.(As long as it is clean and in good shape.)

Must turn them into CTI to get a new whatever he traded for it from them.
The idea is to get fliers into CTI, not recycle the AT hardware. There is nothing stopping AT from doing a similar trade in policy. They choose not to.
Personally I fly both. If it's a motor & will fit in any rocket I have.... then by golly I'll fly it!

This is my opinion as well. I like the flexibility of being able to fly whatever I can get my greasy paws on.
BTW, ask one of the trade in guys if you get a CTI 54mm case and the closure in exchange for a like sized AT. So far all I've heard is you get the case and need to buy the closure.
