    Scratch 2.6 inch Astron Sprint

Didn't take a single pic during the construction, so no build thread. Just want to show off. Pretty happy with the results. LOC 2.6 inch airframe, Estes Phoenix nose cone used for tailcone, home made basswood nose cone, zipperless construction (breaks in the middle, baffle built into coupler). 29mm mount, 41 inches long overall, 30 ounces sans motor. Open rocket says 1600 feet on a G64. Markings by Mark at Stickershock.com. Awesome as always!

That ROCKS John! Beautiful work as always!

Any chance the launch will be on for tomorrow? Lookin' kinda dismal...scattered storms and pretty windy
HOWEVER...assuming a 10 day forecast is worth ANYTHING....next Sunday is showing 79 degrees and sunny

Thanks for all the kind words, guys, I am pretty chuffed with how well it turned out. The only slightly disappointing thing about the whole project was the weight penalty I paid for the right nose cone. Even after extensive hollowing, the bass wood nose weighs twice what a molded plastic cone weighs. Eight ounces opposed to four. I just couldn't put a regular ogive cone on a Sprint, no way. So, it is pretty overstable, even loaded up with an H180, which nets me 3000 feet, by the way, according to Open Rocket.

Not looking too good, is it Jeff? I am pretty sure we are looking at another postponement. If not next week, we are going to be screwed for another month.

Maybe we should stick some motors in the ground and burn as a peace offering to appease the angry rocket gods who keep sending this foul weather our way

I got a couple of shots off at Kloudburst in Argonia, but that's it for 2012 thus far...

You are doing better than I, dude, I haven't burned anything since 2011! I have five or six brand new rockets that haven't seen the sky yet. And here we are , nearly a third of the year behind us already.

Thanks, dude, appreciate the kind words. I had had this project perkolating at the back of my mind for a while now. JimZ provided the plans, I had the wood and tubes laying around already. I had been hesitating for a while, wondering if I should try and turn the nose and tail cones myself or farm it out. Then I came across the Phoenix cone that looked like a pretty good shape for the tail cone. Finally came up with a piece of basswood for the nose and that was all she wrote! Away we went without a thought about grabbing the camera. Oh, well. Maybe next time.

Thanks, Alex, I hate to admit it but that is one of my favorite parts of this hobby! Of course, that doesn't last long, only as long as it takes me to see what THEY brought to fly!

Thanks, Mark, we were supposed to have a launch yesterday but got blown out, again. Maybe next Sunday. The paint is a cheap Viper Red I bought from Smart Shoppers Inc a couple years ago and am just now almost out. I goes for around 70 bucks a gallon but lasts forever, covers great and is really easy to spray if you have a decent gun. It is a catalyzed urethane enamel, so it stands up really well and dries in a couple hours. I am going to buy some more pretty soon to repaint my son's truck, a 88 Jeep Comanche Eliminator. I think it actually ends up being cheaper in the long run than rattle cans, plus you get a better finish. Only downside is, you really have to like the color you pick, cause you are going to see it on a lot of rockets!
