When I needed to do that, I just downloaded the file directly to a specific folder on my desktop, went to OpenRocket, and opened it like an OpenRocket file. Just try downloading it to somewhere where you can find it. If, in the unlikely event that you are using a Mac, you can just spotlight search the file name in the upper right corner.
You might lose some features, such as parachute spill holes, but that doesn't bother me. If the design has any external pods/tube fins, I don't know what would happen if you tried to open it in OR. Probably some massive glitchy computer seizure!![]()
Within the OpenRocket "Open" dialog make sure that the the File Format is for all rocket designs (it should be as that's the default), or if you prefer, filtered for only Rocksim files. Navigate to the download directory and select it.
Anything that OpenRocket does not support (spill holes, pods, etc.) will be identified in a dialog for informational purposes, but the representation of the design will only be of the components that have a corollary in OR.
Roundtripping the OR design back to a Rocksim format is lossy - only those components known to OR are written to the Rocksim file. If you attempt to overwrite the original Rocksim file you'll get a warning dialog asking if that's really what you want to do. For fully supported designs (components) that's typically not a problem - although simulations and specific custom component colors would be lost.
But if you want to keep the original Rocksim design untouched you'll need to "Save As" and enter a different file name.

I right click(windows) and select 'save target as', this gives me the oppertunity to choose which folder it gets saved to.
Hi,
OpenRocket does not by default set itself as the default program for ork or rkt files. Therefore double-clicking an ork or rkt file does not work unless you have set it as the default program yourself. Instead you need to start OpenRocket and open the file from there.

Thanks for the replies!!
I figured it out and all seems good...I have opened rocksim files that members have posted on the forum. but i still cant open the ones from apogee's website!
when I download them its saved as a zip-file (I think). I put all my designs in one folder on the computer (including the ones form apogee) and open rocket can find all of them except the ones form apogee! any help would be great!!
There may be an obvious fix to the problem, its just that I am more of a Mac person & it just happens that all my rocketry stuff is on a windows machine.

if they are zip files, then you will need to unzip them before OR can read them.
THANK YOU!!!!!
I have it all working now!!!!![]()
