    Sugar Horse Alert!!!

Any out there wanna learn how to make an M class motor for about $15.00???

    Me Us and Fly !!

I want to announce an event for the Research community in the Southeastern United States: The Carolina Sugar Workshop. The idea is that a lot of people experienced in or with an interest in using sugar and oxidizer to create rocket propellant will meet at Orangeburg, SC, in the near future to cook up some propellant on-site and exchange ideas and suggestions. The propellant cooking would take place on a Saturday during a standard Commercial motor launch at O'burg, and on Sunday, a TRA Research Event, we would fly or test the motors.

I've asked Jimmy Yawn if he would be interested in coming up from Florida and joining us to add his perspective to the event, and he is definitely interested. He has also suggested another participant who might want to join us. The syllabus for this event would include, but definitely not be limited to:

Choice of sugar. What are the practical differences?
    Burn rate modifiers
Techniques for cooking, pouring, cutting, motor construction and humidity protection
    Ignition
    Choice of Kn

And whatever other subjects pop up during the discussion. The motto for the event be the slogan from the Teach-Ins back in the '60s "If you know, come to teach, if you don't, come to learn, and keep your mind open."

When? The May 5-6 Event at Orangeburg would be the best possible choice because of heat and humidity considerations, but the July 7-8 weekend would also fit our requirements if we can't get our ducks in a row before May.

Please email me [acwhit@nc.rr.com] or Ed Fenton, the prefect of the South Carolina TRA group, if this event interests you at all.

Believe me, I'd be there in a flash if I weren't in the uk.
I'm such a sugar motor addict... The ONLY way to fly

Have fun, write a report and loads of photos. Sure would like to meet Jimmy Yawn, a hero of mine.

I've been toying around with this for quite some years...off and on. I discovered a blend I believe to be the best I have ever worked with. See the vid and give your opinions....please.

Agreed. Nice burn. Seems a little long compared with my recent tests...

I'm almost certain there are better formulas out there. This is just one that I liked. I have been trying to make a large SU motor for years and I almost did it but got tired of fooling with it. The motor in the video had 1 grain about 3" in length, 1" in diameter with a 1/4" core. Probably not the best config but it did hurl an 8 pound brick across my yard in a prior test.

Got a thrust curve? Got a measured Isp?

*This* is how you know when you have a good propellant.

My rockets usually fly naked. If they survive, they earn their paint.

No, I'm really not equipped with the proper tools for such. That's why I tested that motor in a stump. I could only observe the burn. I really would like to know though. It appears to be pretty powerful.

    Update!

    >The first Carolina Sugar Workshop is only 1 week away and plans are coming together. You can see from the To: list above that a LOT of people have expressed an interest and plan to come. We should have a great time, no matter what the weather does.
    >
    >No updates or revisions to the tentative schedule I sent out earlier are necessary at this time. At this point we have 3 or 4 people who have volunteered to prepare some propellant at the field on Saturday and each mix session will offer a great opportunity to ask questions about every aspect of sugar propellant production, storage, and use.
    >
    >I will bring a computer and a projector, so we can all check out Bill Colburn's presentation Saturday night. At this point it is not exactly clear where this will take place, but we have lots of options. Only half in jest I suggest that we could hang a sheet on the side of Eric's RV out in the parking lot and sit on chairs from the rooms and on tail-gates of our pickup trucks and watch it under the stars!! The conference room of the motel is another option.
    >
    >I am planning to come down late Friday so I can be there early Saturday and do any running around for last-minute necessities, while Ed deals with equipment set-up at the field. I don't usually carry a cell-phone, but I will have one with me that weekend and the number is 919 357 5681
    >
    >Once again I want to thank everybody that has agreed to participate in any way. This gathering is a dream-come-true for me, a chance to learn from very best and to observe the exchange of information between experienced people. I'm very excited.
    >
    >If anybody needs anything brought to the field, or directions to the field or to the motel, please don't hesitate to ask me or Ed Fenton. If anybody has suggestions for safety-related equipment or clothing or gloves, etc., that they would like to have present on-site, please reply to ALL OF THE PEOPLE listed in the To; field above.
