Astroid passes between Earth and its satellites

Astroid passes between Earth and its satellites!

NBC just reported that an astroid will pass between Earth and the artificial satellites around the Earth and were not talking about the moon. Its suppose to be here in the next 11 months!
    So much for 12/21/2012!

2012 DA14 is a near earth asteroid with a diameter of about 44 meters and a mass of about 120,000 metric tons[1] which was discovered on February 23, 2012, by the OAM Observatory, La Sagra in Spain (J75).[2] Calculations show that on February 15, 2013, the distance between the asteroid and the Earth will be 0.07 LD (27,000 km; 17,000 mi).[3]

    Hmm... that's a big one.
Hoping for a bounce off the atmosphere.
Plays with wood, cardboard, and carpenters glue at home.

L1 will have to wait until 2013. Oh well.......patience is a lost virtue any-ways...

These close encounters occur more frequently than most realize. Shooting stars, etc., on a smaller scale all the way up to Apophis, the Doomsday asteroid in 2029 and coming back for the End of The World As We Know It Tour on April 13, 2036.

Has since been somewhat discredited recently and now serves mostly as a reason to party like there's no tomorrow at Milliways.

Really only 1:250000 chance of a Level I impact on the Torino Scale.

Mid-size asteroid won't hit Earth in 2013: NASA

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46647666...science-space/

Despite feverish speculation from doomsayers, the near-Earth asteroid 2012 DA14 won't slam into our planet next year, NASA researchers say. The asteroid, which astronomers estimate to be about 150 feet across, will give Earth an uncomfortably close shave on Feb. 15, 2013, coming nearer to our planet than the satellites we've lofted to geostationary orbit. But 2012 DA14 poses no real impact danger on that pass, according to NASA scientists.

"Its orbit about the sun can bring it no closer to the Earth's surface than 3.2 Earth radii on February 15, 2013," researchers with the Near-Earth Object Program Office, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., wrote in an update March. 6.

One Earth radius is roughly 3,963 miles at the equator. So by this reckoning, the nearest 2012 DA14 can get to us next year is 12,680 miles. For comparison, satellites in geosynchronous orbit circle our planet at an altitude of 22,245 miles. Other satellites orbit much lower. The International Space Station, for example, flies at around 240 miles above the planet.

That's a relief. I thought he meant below LEO, not GEO.
