    Midwest vs. Revell Balsa

Last time I was in Michael's getting some balsa I noticed that they had two different brands of balsa; Revell and Midwest. The Midwest balsa was a lot stiffer than the Revell brand, which was not only more flexible, but much softer. Has anyone else noticed this? Is this typical of these brands, or was it just coincidence?

Was there a big cost difference? Here in SoCal Michael's only has Revell balsa and plywood, which is noticably inferior to Midwest IMHO. I've started buying all my wood from Hobbylinc, which has Midwest at reasonable prices.

No, it appeared that they were switching from carrying Midwest to carrying Revell. They were mixed together with no price difference, but there were only a few pieces of Midwest.

Stiffness and softness in balsa have a lot to do with the density (lbs per cubic foot) and the grain (A, B, C).

As a general rule of thumb, lighter balsa is softer and more flexible and heavier balsa is denser and less flexible.

All other things being equal, buy for the building need and don't worry too much about the brand stamped or stickered on the plank.
