My friend's dad got this tube that a carpet was wrapped around. It is about 4 1/4" in diameter, and about 8 feet long! Maybe an inch on each end is unusable due to being crumpled, but that could be trimmed off. It weighs in at about 4 pounds, so it isn't too heavy. What should we do with it?

Holy crap, frank. Just mouse over the thread title for a preview. You've been a member here for about 3 years, I would imagine that you knew that little trick.

Yeah.....All YOU have to do is put your curser over the title and you see the first few sentences.....There is want this thread is about.
As for the tube, is it straight because I have one like that before and it was warped like crazy.

Put three motor pods on the outside of the tube mounted in the fins and leave the center open. No nose cone.
It will be a 3 or 4F0NC. Name it "Core Sampler".
Ooooo Im likeing that!!!!

I agree with the previous poster. Please make the titles of your threads make some sense!! You f' up searches as well.. A better title that would actually HELP in the future is "what to make from a tall 4 in diameter carpet tube?" why is that too much to ask??
Plus it helps everyone else that comes along with a "huge one" perhaps not waste their time posting about something covered. It makes TRF just that much more useful.
Not harsh. Help.

I have one also, Mine is 6 foot and straight, After all said and done... It should be around 5 and half feet.
The question I have is what do you use to coat the outside of it with to keep it from becoming fuzzy? I can see the primer sucking into the tube to the point where sanding is only going to make it a flying hair ball....
Any ideas?
Thanks
Tom
P.S. Im open to suggestions as long as its 3 fins...

Epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol. Paint it on, let it dry and sand it smooth. I did this with a piece of 5.25" carpet core and it came out really nice.

At least you've got a good name for it. Sounds like the thinned epoxy will be the way to go. Then people will wonder about the name even more.
They were thin, tall rockets. There were two versions of the Viking. One was upgraded and became a bit fatter and shorter than the original with a different fin plan.

I'd also consider a hi-build spray on primer. Much less messy than epoxy.

The thinned epoxy might sound like a PIA but it is actually easy to do.
Home Despot and Lowes have those cheap "Chip" brushes (throw away)
If you try to just prime it, you will see TONS (cans) of primer being sucked up into the cardboard. The epoxy dries thin and is easily sandable. It is easy with 1/1 ratio hobby epoxy and also with the West System and equivalent pump system that meters out the correct amount.
The challenge is doing the nose cone to fit..(Foam..balsa) and you will have to cut your own centering rings to fit with a fly cutter or have someone make them to your measured specs.
OK old school here..
Jim Scarpine.."jimzcatz" (when he was a young pup) did a crazy rocket called "Star Rider"
Most have only heard of "Star Leopard"..(Braden take note, and ask him for old photos for the website)
with a 8"-9"carpet tube with a 4" nosecone/transition.
He launched it on a Vulcan single use L-750 Hellfire.
He is currently addicted to fiberglass airframes but still breaks those sometimes.
The L-750 is obviously the top motor.(There is a cardboard Estes BP motor instead of a quarter for scale!)
Maybe Jim saved his as a trophy of sorts?
