I think you would have to call this a soldering/brazing process as opposed to welding. Neither the base metal nor the Durafix unite as one metal. I'd be curious to see if the fins would warp from the heat? Keep us filled in on your findings.

I've used those rods with some smaller aluminum projects. The key is to get the materials super clean prior to heating them up. I believe it has some sort of flux built into the rod and it also cleans up the aluminum as it's getting heated up. While being heated, you sometimes have to continue brushing/scraping off the oxidation.
Not sure about it's overall strength for larger projects but the various websites that sell the rods usually have some pretty good tech info.
