    PML X-Caliber

Okay, I have done fibreglass, I have done paper tubing, now I am delving into the world of phenolic. I am planning on building the X-Caliber but refine it to fly dual deploy instead of CPR-3K (they don't have a mount for the Raven2 which is my altimeter of choice) I will put in an Ebay in a coupler similar to Performance Rocketry, etc.

So since I want to punish this rocket on H-K power, I was considering glassing the phenolic tube and maybe tip to tiping the fins as well. Anything I should look out for with this design?

Also, has anyone tried the wildman injected fin fillets with phenolic tubes?

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Are you certain it's an Xcalliber? I have one and it is quantum tube.

    PML X-Caliber

I built mine for DD by simply adding a Loc EBay $26.
Picked up this kit for $40 on Ebay. I figure it is a low cost kit so why drop lots of $$$ in it. Just bought a Adept 22 $39.99. Streamer and shock cord for drouge from my stock. So entire rocket ready to fly DD is ~$107. The kit is the Quantum BT, I was a little worried about the build using epoxies, but used the Loc Tite marine. It worked great. I will post some pics soon.
Oh by the way if your are gone to fly on K, your gonna have to ditch the 38mm MMT then kiss that rocket goodbye.

You can choose to swap it out for phenolic.

That's a cool option, I didn't know. All of the PML rockets I have were bought second hand.

A tip to tip job on a six finned rocket seems like cruel & unusual punishment to me!

Better stick a tracker in it if you're going to go with more than a small I.

I have one, quantum tube, and have flown it twice on an H73. It really goes. A G is a nice flight. 4 grain 38 is around a mile.

Great kit, flies arrow straight with careful CG/CP management...doesn't need tip to tip reinforcement with the G10 fins and solid fillets (I didn't even do external fillets on this one as an experiment--flown 10+ H & I motor flights that way). I've flown mine up to an CTI I285, and that flight was completely out of sight...literally.

Not sure I'd make it DD--probably would rather go with a larger rocket for J power motors. Plus, the CG tends to be somewhat to the rear since the whole upper half is an empty payload compartment in the normal, motor eject SD configuration. A stock one could use nose weight for any motor 29/240 or larger. Mine has a Slimline tailcone motor retainer, which looks great to me--YMMV. Be sure to rough up the Quantum tubing for the epoxy to adhere to if you don't get the phenolic.

Tracker is a must for anything going over 5K feet. My 3" competitor just took a trip to 9K on a Healthy K motor. The empty payload is partially why I am building it dual deploy. Will have to weight the aft end of the rocket and see where the CG ends up.
