This was the Smothers Brothers TV appearance where they over did the black powder charge and damaged an ear drum or two....(Daltry IIRC).

Think Tommy Smothers was in on the gag where Pete smashed his guitar too?
    Or was it spontaneous?
We got two categories of pilots around here. We got your prime pilots that get all the hot planes, and we got your pud-knockers who DREAM about getting the hot planes.
Now what are you two pud-knockers gonna have?... Huh?”

It's that..."I'm feeling richer because I'll smash other peoples guitars" effect.

Tommy Smothers was always in on the gag. The Smothers Brothers Comedy hours was one of the best shows on TV in the late 60's. Their political satire was so good that Nixon pressured CBS to take the show off the air in spite of high ratings.

Seen that video before, but noticed Keith Moon didn't re-appear!
If you arent a Who fan you gotta understand how their line-up worked.
John Entwistle was the bass player but was the who's "Lead guitarist" per say.
Pete Townshend was the Lead Guitarist, but was more like Rythym guitar and one of 3 lead vocalists.(He was the main song writer)
Roger Daltry was the lead singer, but frequently sang background or fill vocals to John and Pete.(three lead singers)
Keith Moon was the drummer, but anyone that listens to him realizes he plays rythym drums or over plays the entire band with his constant cymbal and fills.frequently playing in double time when he didn't have to. I really miss Keith

Check out "A quick one while he's away" on the Rolling Stones "Rock and Roll Circus" on Youtube.
