    Where to shoot off rockets?

I live in Sarasota, FL. I would like to start a rocket club but don't know where to begin.

The Apogee Components "Peak of Flight" newsletter also has a number of articles on startig, growing and maintaining clubs. Here is the topic index: http://www.apogeerockets.com/Peak-of-Flight_index.asp

The Tampa Tripoli prefecture flies monthly at Varn Ranch in Plant City. The property is around 300 acres, with plenty of room for whatever you want to fly. Non-members are welcome (I'm not a member). LPR flyers pay $5, and HPR flyers pay $10, for the day. I've flown there for the last three months or so, and it's a nice place, and the folks are plenty friendly. We have a few folks from SW Fla (Sarasota, Bradenton, Fort Myers) that are regulars. Check out the TTRA website: http://www.ttra.ws/

The next TTRA launch is Oct. 15. It might be a bit of a drive for you, but I think you'll find it worth the time.
A good day of flying rockets is one where you get all the parts back.

Sarasota puts you right between TTRA mentioned above and FLASH down
    in Fort Meyers - http://narflash.weebly.com/

The good news is FLASH flys on the 2nd Saturday and TTRA on the 3rd Saturday so you could potentially do both!

If you're ever in the Orlando area, check out ROCK- www.r-o-c-k.org
we launch on the 1st Saturday's.

For a list of clubs near you please see:

    Rocketry clubs near Sarasota, FL

The above link lists the approximate distance to each club's nearest launch site and, clicking on a club's name in the list, displays information about the club and the club's launch sites (with a map).

BTW ... By letting you know about clubs in your area, we're not trying to discourage you from starting your own club if that's what you want to do. Attending an existing club's launch will let you see what's involved, allow you to ask questions, and help you gauge interest in your proposed new club.

Another resource for help starting a club is the information on the National Association of Rocketry's site on how to form a NAR section:

And... Roger's list tells you.. come to Tampa Tripoli. You won't regret it. You may still want to start a club in Sarasota (as I have been thinking of for Lakeland), but until then, Varn Ranch is a REALLY nice field - one of the best I've ever seen. Bring food and drinks (no vendors, yet), and bring a canopy if you have one. If not, look me up, and you can hang out in the shade.
