The Student Launch Initiative flights were completed this weekend with great success. The SLI and USLI are NASA programs using sport rocketry and supported by NAR mentors. The launch itself is hosted by the Huntsville Area Rocketry Association, NAR section 403. Over four hundred people from eighteen colleges and fourteen high schools teams participated to each build and launch a rocket to carry a science experiment to an altitude of one mile.

If you're not familiar with it, SLI is one of the coolest rocketry programs I've ever seen.

NASA puts a lot of energy into it, and the HARA folks bust their butts making it all happen. I truly commend the HARA folks for their efforts in the RSO duties, and making sure that everything that flies is safe -- it's a challange, and the discussions can be...entertaining. But they get it done.

-Kevin (who really wishes he could've been there this year)

I agree Kevin.
NASA and the HARA folks did a great job this year.
I was the L2 mentor for a first time IL. team.
Due to an unfavorable weather forcast for Sun. all flights were on Sat.
I think that worked out for the better.
All flights were done by about 2 PM.
I think a couple things help speed things up.
1. The HARA folks had the motors prebuilt.
2. The winds forcast for Sat. in the pm was for 15mph+.
It did not happen but I think everyone was wanting to beat the weather.
If I recall right the range opened at 10 AM and the first rack was ready to fly by 10:15.
The HARA folks did a great job on the LSO checks.
I would like to thank them and NASA for putting on a great launch.
Also the students were enjoyed to meet and talk to Homer Hickam.

You nailed it right there.

The HARA guys work their tails off to make it all happen, and they do it with a very positive attitude.

Here's an open question for anyone that can answer... are all of the SLI teams flying the same motor, or do they spec the motor from a group of available ones, or...?

We're going to try awfully hard in a few weeks to earn an invite to SLI next year. Didn't make it last year and was disappointed to see one of the local high schools that did squander their opportunity for a really cool program.

So, hopefully, we'll be there next year!

There are some limitations; I can't tell you exactly what they are. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe any CTI or AT motor is allowed, within reason.

I'm a student at Case Western Reserve University, and have some interest in getting a USLI team started. Unfortunately, the information on USLI is limited. Any chance I could get some more info on the goals/requirements to get the guys in the Aerospace club interested?

Thanks!

Get in touch with Julie Clift; her info about 3/4 of the way down. She's the one who can get you answers to your questions.

Some of the colleges describe the program and how they got in it. Look for an RFP or proposal document to see how it begins. There's a lot of paperwork required but they got Space Grant funding assistance to build an L2 rocket.
