I have one of these on my build list, just so I know is there any reason why CA is used so much on this rather than a white or yellow wood glue ?

Reason for asking is I know from reading CA is used by aero modellers because of its lower weight and also makes it faster to build ........I did a lot of reading on wood glues prior to building my telescope eyepiece case ( which uses a LOT of wood parts ) I didnt come to any conclusions from reading so I made some test strips up using different glues. i found the CA would split apart a lot easier than a white PVA based glue. As PVA and aliphatic ( yellow glue) has about the same properties apart from drying time I assume yellow glue would have the same strength.

Hence the question why CA ? Is it just weight and drying time ?

This is just a guess, but I think it's so you can put the interlocking pieces together, then wick CA into the joints. You can reinforce it with wood glue or epoxy later if necessary.

Beats me... but titebond dried almost instantly when I was assembling the intakes. I have not used CA (superglue) since I was in my early teens; I just remember how messy it was, and it didn't always work that well. Since the intakes are WOOD, I used WOOD glue- I have lots of it and it's cheap.

I love that you read up on the subject and then experimented by putting them to the test in a real-life application- THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO DO IT!!!

Nice flight, congrats.
I don't know how these threads get by me, guess I should pay more attention. It was mentioned in a earlier post about doing an upscale, well my buddy did. I posted pics on my site, I'm still waiting for the finshed(painted) pics but it still looks pretty good. https://midcoastrocketry.com/Customer-Projects.html

Oh damn.....I should not have looked at that !!!

Now that`s all I`m going to be thinking about .

Did you see the completed pics a few posts up? If not you probably shouldn't:D

YUP.....that didn`t help

What a beautiful upscale !

Make note to self : project # UP-SC- 65

The world is ending when again ?

Paul T

Well if the worlds ending theres no reason not to do it is there ? :)

I know I know ,it`s just that I had all my builds prioritised according to skill level and the amount of time needed to complete them ,and then those damn Mayans throw a wrench into my schedule

I am still looking into that for you.

Now that's funny right there! LOL

Since the world is ending in less than a year, that means I can stop paying my bills and buy more rockets and motors. Right?

Yeah, don't blame it on the Mayans.

In between working on the Ajax, I finished assembling my QCC Explorer and now she's ready for primer.

The camera is tilted not the rocket...*grin*

Does anyone know if anyone has modeled this in open rocket or rocksim yet? My three inch upscale is almost done and it would be great to know where the CP is so I can balance her properly.:confused2:

>> I decided to try some spray sanding sealer on the fins and intakes

How did the sealer turn out? Did it cover the grains very well? I'm not one to fill in grains or tubes very much either! :p Thanks for the build thread.

Just picked up this kit and it does look like a great build! I do like the higher skill rated kits - thanks John! Do not like 3-4FNC rockets, but this rocket has great personality!

Gotta get started on this kit - only 298:17:13:45 days till the end! :bangpan:

Anyone put an ejection baffle in place of coupler?

Thanks,
Pat

The spray sanding sealer actually worked better on the balsa than I expected. Up close you can still see a little bit of the grain, but it's plenty smooth enough for me.

Any luck with replacement decals? I was just halfway through the decals on mine when I realized all the intakes were the same! D'oh! Now my QCC is half naked :(

You know, I still haven't done the decals on mine. I need to get that done one of these days.

I have to say that these decals went on nicely - nothing too teeny for me to try to get in the right place. Nice material that didn't rip on me. Plus, they really make the rocket complete. It looked OK before the decals but pretty SWEET after!

Now if I could only have gotten my E18 to light yesterday it would have taken to the sky....

I ended up improvising on my decals, made some strategic cuts and they ended up looking just fine, only really notice the difference if you are up close to it. Has flown great each time, my then 6 year old picked it out for me, so she got to choose the color of the nose cone, not exactly like the red recommended, but she liked it!

When I did the decals on mine, I didn't use the black stripes that go on either side of the gray area, or the red triangles that go on the intakes. (Even though mine did come with the full set.) I was very pleased with the lighter, cleaner look, though that's just my personal opinion. :)
It's a great flier; mine has known nothing but E9's so far (E9-6's have the perfect delay), but next month I hope to launch it on an E18W.
Thanks again to John Boren for designing such a great kit! :D

It does great on the E9's, have a new pack of E12's to try out now!!!

OK I just finished this entire thread from beginning to end:y:.I was thinking about getting one of these next instead of another Vagabond so ..yes it will be an explorer.Great build thread Quake and videos.Kudos to you plus this is a dollar cheaper than the Vagabond:grin::caffeine::caffeine::caffeine:

It's a great flyer. A little more challenging to build than some, but well worth the effort.

Anyone tried E18 or 28's in these...and got it back?

Yup, E18-7. I did downsize the chute to a 15" Top Flite thin mill one, though. I think it was you I mentioned this to in another head, but with the seven second delay it ejects just after is arcs over.
