OK...I'm new...should the rubber part of a rail button be able to turn at lift-iff...or is it just to guide the rocket on the rail?
 
from what I've read, they should be free to turn(I would guess that the screw should have roughly 0.001" clearance).

Mine don't turn, because the bottom plastic piece( it's not rubber) is usually epoxied to the air frame by just a bit of overflow from epoxying the threads into the rocket. We are however going to try something new, we are going to epoxy a #4 barrel nut into a rockets airframe, that way there is threads embedded into the airframe, that way we can simply thread the rail buttons into the barrel nut, and remove them if we need to.

They can be done either way but they will last longer if you allow them to rotate a bit.
