    NARAM travel grant--free money!

An opportunity to take a big bite out of your NARAM travel costs, as just announced by Trip Barber, NAR president:

"NAR travel funding grants of up to $800 each are available for up to five B Division (age 14-17) first-time competitors at NARAM-53. Young NAR members who want to attend their first NARAM under this program must apply to Joyce Guzik, NAR Trustee. The deadline for receipt of these packages has been extended to June 25. The application package is attached."

I think they've done it every year since it was first offered (about 4 years ago), but it's obviously subject to funding, and with so few taking advantage of it, the funds should be there.

I'd also point out that Bob Alway (Rockets of the World author Peter's brother and teammate) has established a very generous scholarship program in memory of their father, awarded to B divisioners who compete in the research and development event at NARAM, not just first-timers. There's no guarantee in any given year how many will be awarded money, or how much, as it's related to the quality of the R & D work. Still, it's been impressive in years past, thousands of dollars most years.

Dangle the $800 travel grant in front of them plus the potential R & D money towards college, and you're practically coming out ahead of a summer job (if such a thing even exists these days). Usually it's the parents dragging the teenagers into it, but you've got it backwards .

I think questions about the program would best be directed to the NAR, specifically Joyce, the head of the program. I'm basically the middleman, letting folks know that there's a great opportunity out there to have a large portion of NARAM costs covered.

I would imagine the funding is NOT paid in advance, since one of the conditions is that the B divisioner/teen make a brief speech/presentation to the board at NARAM, talking about what he/she learned at NARAM.

Ah.... Because that might be the only way I would be able to get there.
