This evening I was watching the hockey playoffs and building one of the Saturn I's. While rolling the LOX tanks, my first one came out fine and then the second one sucked... so did the third... and the fourth. I reaced into my box of spare tanks and pulled out a good one... and 3 crummy ones.
"What is it with these LOX tanks that there's always one good one and 3 crummy ones?" I mumbled. Then it struck me... indeed, WHAT is it? I looked at the tank sheet that they are cut from and saw that 3 were printed on the sheet horizontally and for spacing 1 is printed vertically. Hummmmm... maybe it has something to do with the fiber structure of the card stock? Like grain in a sheet of wood, perhaps the fibers run vertically, I thought. So, I reconfigured a set of tanks on the computer and printed a sheet with all 4 going vertically. They rolled out MUCH better with almost zero issues.
So- I have now taken all of the tank patterns and made them vertical and from now on all of the Saturn I and IBs will have have their tanks printed that way. Of course it will take a long time before the kits will begin showing up that way as each kit will need to sell out of stock before the sheets get changed out. The first kit to have the new tanks will be the Apollo 5 Saturn IB, which I'll be restocking next week. If, however, one of you out there would like a set of the new sheets, just e-mail me at drzooch at yahoo dot com and I'll send you a set at no charge.
Now... back to the playoffs.
