We may be able to fix it without a lot of trouble. Everyone- take a look at the fins on Foose's SAV on the pad and then compare to Delta-IV's... you'll see what tipped me off here. D-IV, do not rip into the rocket just yet... let's see if we can do an easy fix here.

Being very exacting, trace around the a fin or use a caliper to get the EXACT size and shape that is outside of the fairing. Then enter that size into Rocksim. Check stability. We may be able to add weight in the nose to make up for the differance.

I noticed those swept fins right off the bat too, but never thought to draw a parallel between that and the marginal stability. Makes sense though.

On the Saturn V kit, fin size and shape are both super critical.

Attached below is the result. I don't have a caliper per se but the rocksim version I downloaded from EMRR says I still have a 6.52 margin with only 1.2 inches from the CP to CG......tilt...tilt...that does not compute....tilt...tilt....

    Downloading updates...

    AKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

It's amazing that you got one good flight out of it!

Yer' probably gonna have to rip those fins out. PM me your snail-mail address and I'll send you replacement wraps and if you don't have a spare piece of T-20 tube I'll send you that too.

Just for the sake of argument, couldn't he use the fin template/overlay he just made to cut some balsa fin 'additions' and glue them on top of the existing fins (much as you would if they had been broken)? then sand/fill/repeat etc.?

..and I'd like to add, it was one of the neatest as well, fairly slow, straight as an arrow, no wobble, no spin and the rocket slid back into its own smoke and deployed the chute.

It surely didn't give me any indication that I had screwed up the fin assembly.

Here's another idea- simply cut the old fins off, flush to the fairing surface. Then simply cut new fins and glue them on where the old ones were. The fins on the Saturn V kit are designed to break away in an impact anyhow. And using most yellow wood glues should make them just as secure as the stock build. Work on this should be minimal.

Forget the milk money... just go into mommy or daddy's drawer and look for a fat sock... you can buy my rockets with that money.

Not a chance!! I'm 44 years old and Dad still tells me he'll whoop me if I don't behave!

    New Fins

I cut off the old fins, made new ones and now have 3 glued on. Will glue the last one on tomorrow and then paint. Re-work photos coming tomorrow PM.

    Thumbs up

Carl really did a great job on this corrective action.
Here's a few shots from the NEFAR launch today. I think
this launched twice on C6's - perfect each time despite 5-8 mph winds.

Yes, 2 flights good as could be considering a nice push from a Southwest wind. Both times it went up straight, although the second flight today had a bit of a cork screw?? C6-5's, and yes a C6-7 would be ideal. Gotta buy some for this rocket.
