The AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, or AMRAAM (pronounced "am-ram"), is a modern beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) capable of all-weather day-and-night operations. Designed with the same form-factor as the previous generation of semi-active guided Sparrow missiles, it is a fire-and-forget missile with active guidance. It is also commonly known as the Slammer in USAF service.

This is a sport-scale version of the popular Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.

The actual missile is powered by solid-propellant rocket motors. The rocket kit flies on motors ranging from a D12-5 to an F42-7.

The AMRAAM 120A kit includes a parachute kit for recovery, balsa stock for fins, and three plywood centering rings.

The many small decals add lots of detail to this flying model rocket kit.

Challenges

The AMRAAM has a tailcone which is formed from a cardstock template. This makes it a Skill Level 4 rocket kit.

There are lots of small decals/ printed on a single decal sheet. Cutting out and handling the small decals can take time.

Just a scratch built fun flying scale model is the Ammraam 120a. T3 tube body made scribing in the sections easy. and allowed a fincan tail section with tailcone was possible in basswood. At this size the model's 8.4gram mass give quick but watchable flights to 90 feet or so. Recovers on a 3/4" x 18" heavy orange teflon tape streamers.

Hello, I created the one attached because I could not find one for my build. Curtis and Tim did not have one to share.

I created from diagrams on websites. Each item weighted and measured when kit received. Note I have used addition centering rings in the build not found in standard kit. Care has been take in creation of this rocksim to include every items, but use at your own risk.

Enjoy, please tell me of any suggestions or comments.

Interesting thing about this kit is the ebay/switch band/fin can. Very heavy and thick due to double walls. I added extra centering rings for fin can and make clean ends. See the photo of the switch barely coming thru inner wall.

Where did you put you vent holes?

I placed three altimeter vent holes same location as switch. Same as switch bands on my Wildman and LOC ebays hole configurations. There is also one small pressure vent hole in payload and sustainer tubes lined up with the rail buttons.

I've purchased a few kits from The Rocketarium before, but one time I went there and noticed that they stopped selling other manufacturer's kits (TLP, Fliskits, etc.) and only selling their own kits. I was looking for a TLP AIM-120 kit and saw that they had one and decided to give it a try. I worked in 3 different missile shops for over 7 years when I was in the Air Force and have plenty of experiece with the real missile systems (I was also instrumental in some of the TCTO changes). I have a few of the Estes kits and they are pretty good...but like every other kit the small details are either wrong or just not there. The sticker sheet was very spartan and unfortunately I haven't found a scale sticker sheet to use so I just had to go with what I had.
The build was very straightforward, but I was impressed with the quality of the tubes and the balsa stock. Everything went together very easily and was effortless. The instructions are pretty sparse as well concerning the markings and what colors to use. Previously I haven't been able to replicate the correct shade of gray for the AIM7/9/120 missile systems (they are all the same color gray enamel) but I have finally found it. It is the Rust-Oleum Professional gray primer #7582 and it comes in a big 15oz. rattle can. This is the perfect shade. The live missiles are painted with a no-name gray enamel in a rattle can, so this is pretty much the same thing. It has the perfect matte color. The wings and fins are made from titanium and they aren't painted. They are also made by 2 different manufacturers, so if you really want to get technical the wings are slightly shiny while the fins are more matte. The kit didn't have a provision for the wave guide or the data link. The Estes kit has a wave guide, but it's far too short unlike on the real missile. I just used some left over balsa stock and lightly contoured it. The data link is always forgotten on the kits (I actually almost forgot it myself) and I made one from a dowel that came with my TLP AIM-9 kit. The real data link can look like either a piece of soap or like it was made from cardboard. I went with the cardboard look and just modified a dowel. It's not perfect, but at least it's there. Anyway, here are some pics of my build.

Hi,
Here are several photos of an inert AMRAMM 120 that is used by the Oregon Air National Guard for training armament specialists in loading aboard Air Force Reserve and Oregon Air National Guard Aircraft. These missiles are also flown on training flights when not on an operational mission. Armed AMRAMM 120's are flown by these same squadrons on operational jets that are on a coastal defense patrol mission. A co-worker of mine works as an armament specialist in this unit and was given permission to take these pictures for me. The missile on the top in an inert Sidewinder and I think the one shown on the bottom is a Sparrow. All of the close ups are of the AMRAMM 120. The radar guidance unit is in the nose cone. You can see how the fins rotate. You can also clearly see the hooks that connect the missile to the underside of the fighter jet. . I was told that the blue stripes signify that the missile is inert and has no warhead. Live missiles have a yellow and brown stripe. I hope this is of some help to all of you who are interested in some of the scale details of the AMRAMM 120.

Stock built Estes AMRAAM, at least 12 years old. I'm pretty sure all I used on it was Testors plastic cement (I don't need an adhesives lecture anymore).

The day's first flight (not the rocket's) was on an Estes A8-3, BARELY enough motor for a successful flight, altitude of maybe 50". Second flight was on an Estes C6-3, very nice flight; however it landed on pavement and a fin corner took a little ding and it left the aft launch lug on the rod.
