    L1 Certification Gallery

Ok. I'll start this one off. Let's see what you used for your L1 certification.

    Was it successful?

    Would you do something different?

Back when it was allowable, I used an Applewhite 38mm Cinco with a streamer for active deployment.

I'd like to start threads for L2 and L3 as well but right now I am just L1.

I got my L1 on a Public Enemy Ultra Fatboy using an H242-M. It flew at Maryland Tripoli's ESL-29 on 11/20/99.

I used a LOC Bullet for my Level 1 Cert. I used a H123 motor for a perfect flight. Here is a picture of just before the flight in 2007 in Sterling, CT. Here is another picture of the same rocket replicating the same flight at LDRS 28.

My first L1 cert was in April of 2003. The rocket was a PML Tethys flying on a Pro38 H153. After flying over 30 times that season, it was lost to the tree gods.

My L1 re-cert was with at Red Glare 8 in April of 2010. The rocket was a Wildman Drago on a Pro29 H133B. After only 3 flights, this one was lost to the hard runway landing gods.

I flew my L1 in 2009, on a Wildman Jr. called "Project Dark Star". Went up on an AT H148R.

Note that this was BEFORE Wildman came out with a different kit called a Dark Star.

Mine is a tribute to the Grateful Dead.

I got my L1 with a scratch-built crayon rocket called "Waxy Smoke"

Flies great on CTI Pro29 3-grain reloads.

    Well.....

It just so happens that I wanted to start a Crayon rocket thread for the gallery. Do you mind if I copy this post for its inauguration?

    Today! 2/12/11

HOTROC launch at Asa Texas. Scratch built on a Cesaroni H90 classic.

Took two flights. First one I packed the chute too tight and she fell with the nosecone hanging out about 6" from 1800 feet or so. No damage. I love Quantum tube (please don't turn this into a quantum tube debate thread).

Removed the dirt plug from the body tube, cleaned her up, new motor and success.

Didn't get her completely painted in time, but at least she didn't fly naked.

    Cogratulations.

It seems most of the Texas clubs had a good day. Ours had the most participants ever.

    Oops 2 L1 Cert

Just got my L1 yesterday. Perfect flight!

    Oops 2 is a spin off of Larry Brand's H-Pod. 3" diameter, 27" long, 7x 54mm tube fins.

First flight was on a G79-8ss which roared off the pad, but had a bit of bonus delay. After recovering that unharmed (thank you zipperless) I reloaded it with a H143-6ss and had another perfect flight to a predicted 2000'. Long walk though on a 36' chute.

Thank you Scott Turnbull for supervising the process.

My L1 was a scratch build out of 2" mailing tubes. The nose cone was also made out of the same tubing. It's flown more than a few times on H128's and H165's. It's due for an I200. It's sims to over 4000' so should be fun. Flight pic is of my actual L1 Cert Flight in 2009. However, I somehow forgot to send in my paperwork and have to re-cert. Darn.

My L1 (twice) was a scratch built. Bass Pro fishing rod shipping tube, lumber yard plywood fins, wooden nose cone turned by a friend. 38mm I-357.

Here is my LOC IV level one cert:

I had fun with the paint job

Here is the flight at the Black Rock Desert:

If you look at the first photo you'll see that I painted "L1 CERT" on it. At the time I thought I was being clever. But when I went to fly it the second time, I had to convince the RSO that I was already certified. Not a big deal I guess, but after I zippered the tube, and rebuilt, I gave it a totally different paint job.

Got mine 5-5-12 with a scratch built Ralphco / Fantasia Nike Smoke (Crayon)
First attempt went up, and came down with nose off, but chute stuck in tube, almost no damage to the hefty cardboard tube from the 2000ft freefall. 2nd attempt, with less bulky chute, went to 2000ft and was recovered easy! Both flights on CTI Pro38 2 grain H225's with 11 second delay.

I achieved my L1 using a custom scratch built 2.6" rocket on a 29 mm H128 in June of 2011. I built the tube using 2" pvc pipe as the mandrel (3 layers of 110 lb cardstock), turned the balsa nose cone on my lathe, and used 1/4" plywood from the shop for fins. The 30" parachute was sown by my lovely wife using ripstop nylon with 1/16" nylon shroud lines over the top. I built a baffle so as not to have to use protection for the parachute. The first picture is of the loading for the L1 flight. The second is liftoff at a later launch on a G engine.
