Description: In early 1957, the Stanford Research Institute presented a study that a small single-stage sounding rocket would be very useful to measure winds at an altitude of up to 45 km (150000 ft) after nuclear tests to determine the spreading of radioactive fallout. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Air Force Cambridge Research Center (AFCRC) concluded that such a system had a general utility as a high-altitude weather probing tool, and awarded Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC) a contract to develop this sounding rocket in January 1958. ARC designed the Arcas rocket, the first of which was ready for flight tests in late 1958. By the end of 1960, more than 400 Arcas rockets had been launched.

The title of this thread should be renamed Scale-Arcas Gallery as the HV Arcas refers to a specific model of the sounding rocket. Only the AeroTech and Mad Cow kits represent this version of the sounding rocket.

How did I miss this thread?? I've been on an Arcas kick the past few years and have built several sizes.

The first one was a 6" diameter upscale with a 4" hole:

The 2.6" went 13,961 feet and Mach 1.6 on the K700 flight in the second pic. It was over a mile away but recovery was no problem with the tracker.

The 3" version did 28,605 on an M840.

Wow, nice Arcases (Arcai?) dudes! Here's several shots of my full scale HV on it's most recent flight (last weekend) on a Pro38 5G J357 Blue Streak. It's based on the 'Boosted Arcas I' variant pictured below. It's scratch built using a Performance Rocketry cone and fiberglassed paper tubes. 54mm MMT. It was used for my first L2 several years back and I just re-certified L1 and L2 with it this past December. The booster was actually dismantled for a while until I rebuilt it last fall for my re-certs. It has a new motor mount/fins and the new tube for the booster section is a Totally Tubular Arcas tube that was glassed. The ones I used originally are no longer available. What a great flying design. Arrow-straight flights every time!!! I do plan to build the matching booster for it.... (2) I800's staging to a K185W or K375NW anyone????

Here is my Arcas, it's at aerotech kit I modified slightly....as for the colour, this is the closest to stock since I don't do stock paint. the build thread is in the high power forum(in CRC build thread)
I have yet to fly it yet, but that will happen within the next few weeks.

Here is a build thread and some pictures of a 60% scale boattail ARCAS I scratch built. It flys nicely on 2 grain 38mm motors

Mine is an eBay refugee that had the fins put on upside down. I flew it once "as delivered", then tore the fins off, cut new ones, and printed off a decal.

Funny, I started this one with our original AT HV Arcas that flew many years. Here's the new glass full scale ARCAS rebirth of ARCASpants. Planning on flying her this weekend on a K850 dark matter.
