Ess-tuz or ess-tiz. That's how I've always pronounced the name.

Not to criticize the video too much, but it looks like a very good community TV production. That's kind of damning with faint praise. I would think a company like Estes could find a better production company. Particularly telling is the announcer who is over-modulating at times.

Ok, I'd love to hear your comments on *this* gem:

Don't forget there is a second part to this video!

And some others worth watching:

Obviously they needed to bring the King of Proper Modulation out of retirement:

I wonder if the over-mod is to make it sound "NASA-esque".

After watching it, I thought of a dairy product or what a photographer says to someone to get them to smile.

It has got me to thinking, if I were to storyboard a rocketry ad for Estes, I wonder what I would come up with? Hmmmmmm....

"Model Rocketry, the Last Frontier" was done as part of a kids series in the early 70's, and was actually quite good for its time. I've talked to the producer, and he did the animation on the cheap as just about everyone did when they needed short animated segments back then (no Flash! and in the early 70's you had three choices. Disney, Hanna-Barbera, and you could throw lots of money at Warner Bros. to get them to dust off the animation tables, as they had mostly shut down. There were others, like the Hubleys, but if you wanted it fast and cheap, you pretty much had to do it yourself), and he had the kids in his neighborhood build the rockets (that shows!). Other shows in the series, also hosted by Shatner (who did the series apparently as a favor, as the producer was also with Paramount), featured subjects like hang gliding, skateboarding, and skiing. That super Slo-mo camera and its film? Not cheap at all.

Estes bought the episode years later, and he says they cut some parts from it, but he hadn't seen it in years and couldn't tell me what they'd cut. Probably just stuff that referred to the series.

As for the other two, Vern's historical film is just a collection of home film preserved on video that he made with Windows Movie Maker, and we're glad to have it.

James Duffy's nominating video for G. Harry is excellent. James is not what I'd call a professional announcer, but he was clear, and his levels were good.

Why, thank you! The G. Harry vid was a great deal of fun to put together, and I'm glad folks have enjoyed this little recap of the early days of the hobby. And you are correct, I'm not a professional announcer. On the day I recorded that particular voiceover, I was not only an amateur, but also immensely congested and highly medicated. (We were on a very tight deadline trying to get the package finished in advance of an FAI Subcommittee meeting.)

Gosh, I wonder who posted those Shatner vids? Could it have anything to do with the stacks of Old Rocketeer Reunion masters on the shelf in my edit room? Hmmmm...

Oh, my... what's the word...

I like the old Shat-man rocket vid. Actually really good for the time, and some of the slow-motion stuff is GREAT. Fun to watch (in my mind, I see it with updated animation), and it actually hase useful information! Who knew.

The G. Harry vid is very nice, and very watchable. The "Vern and Gleda move to Penrose" was actually pretty cool. I like a guy who builds his own company.

The new vid... Hmmm... I like that it was in color, and the Mosquito was very nice.

Of course this brings up a point. It's a lot easier to critique than it is to create. Perhaps we should pool our resources and make a new/better video. :pop:

Yes, Roy... I'm hinting :D

Earlier this year I got inspired by a presentation at a bloggers group on "Web Video". It was done by a guy who used to be a reporter/cameraman for CNN and some Florida stations, and he was using a little Kodak Zi8 "Flip-style" video camera because he could use an external microphone with it. He had more invested in the audio setup (with a small mixer, wireless lavalier mics, small shotgun mic, etc) and said that since just about any video editing software can make the video look good, you need to concentrate on audio to make it sound professional.

So, I got a Zi8, and it is pretty decent, but I've only bought one lavalier microphone on a long cord and haven't yet gotten the results I want.

I have a copy of Model Rocketry: The Last Frontier. Obtained as a premium with a $100 purchase from America's Hobby Center out of NYC. We note that a few of the rockets seemed hastily built. Look at The Big Bertha's fins. The Gyroc is launched with the spin vanes activated. The launcher almost tips over during the Starfighter launch. Shatner almost gets scorched launching the Klingon model.:eyepop:

ACTUALLY ROY, I was hinting that we need to "do" a rocket video, not that you were being overly critical.

I knew it was pronounced s-tes. I had a neighbor with the same name and spelling, while flying rockets as a kid. I have heard other people say s-teeze and thought it funny, but never said anything.:D
