Mfg. Description: Our newest Maxi-Brute is a 1/9 scale model of the famous U.S. Army surface-to-surface, supersonic ballistic missile. Lists as a 762mm, very heavy field artillery rocket, the real M31 series Honest John follows a free flight trajectory similar to that of an artillery shell. First developed as a JATO booster for other missiles, the motor had such tremendous thrust that a warhead and fins were added to make it a separate rocket. Completely mobile, the Honest John can be carried by and fired from a regulation Army truck. A small team of only five or six men is required for handling and launching. Employing a solid fuel rocket motor, it has high reliability coupled with great accuracy over a range of 15 to 30 miles. Producing a thrust of 90,950 lbs it travels at speeds of mach 1.5 and is capable of delivering a nuclear or high explosive warhead. Spin motors provide initial stabilization at liftoff. One of the main stays of the Army's tactical atomic weapons system, the Honest John has been operation with US Pentomic airborne and infantry divisions and overseas with our NATO forces.

Our new, highly detailed version of this well known rocket uses single "D" engine power for truly realistic lift-offs.

Smaller diameter body should make it our best performing Maxi. Comes with pre-shaped, accurately scaled fins and molded plastic nose cone, plus quick-release engine mount and additional scale data. Spectacular recovery with dual 24" orange and white canopy chutes. Great for demonstrations and perfect as a display model. A 3/16" is recommended for best lift-off results. (Estes 1995 Catalog)

I`d like to know what happened to all the Maxi Pershing 1As

I`ll have to move one of those HoJos to the top of the build list and beef it up for 29mm reloads.

The Pershing was the last rocket I built as a kid. I was already mostly out of it but liked the look of the Pershing. I built it and launched it from the middle of my school's football field.

The school was Texas Military Institute. It sat back then on a cliff overlooking US 281. I did not expect much performance from that thing on a D12-3 but it went up, drifted over the cliff, across 281 and landed somewhere near the San Antonio Gun Club. I never saw it again but it is one I would like to re-acquire.

I have a Roachwerks Pershing. I just need the time, money and employment to build it.

The FlisKits Honest John 1:61 represents a first for FlisKits in that it is our first Scale Model. While not containing the kind of detail that you would find in a larger version of this model, the Micromaxx® Honest John is still a model you can be proud to build and fly!

This tiny representation of the famous Honest John missile features laser cut 1/16" thick basswood fins. These laser cut fins also feature a precise etched line to indicate the sanding line when feathering the edges to match that of the real missile. Also included with this exciting kit are silk screened decals providing the US ARMY decal (times 2) along with pitch/yaw markers and even decals representing the spin motors on the nose cone. Of course the die-hard scale modeler is welcome to try their hand at carving scale spin motors to attach to the nose cone!

Further, the nose cone, tiny as it is, is as close to true scale as we can make it, with the tail end of the cone a true conic shape. Many version of the Honest John model have errored in this respect, making the entire cone a curved profile.

As small as she is, she still performs incredibly well with Micromaxx® motors and can easily soar to 100 feet and beyond on MMXII motors. The Honest Goon requires slightly more skill than the other GOONYs as the modeler must build the nosecone from a balsa transition and a balsa nosecone. We rate it at Skill Level 2. Estes Mini Honest John.

I was looking to build a cheap FAST rocket and after some calculations decided to modify an $8.95 Mini Honest John. The body tube was 'Doped' to strengthen it as it would also be acting as the engine mount. The motor case of choice was the Aerotech Hobbyline RMS 24-60 using an F35-11W. The nose cone was filled with Variable density two part foam and hollowed to fit the Micro Beacon (from Apogee Rockets, excellent customer service!) Loading was tight, but WOW did it GO

Great recovery, was a very calm day. I am hoping to launch it again soon and will do my best to get some footage. I should have noted that I replaced the kit shock cord for a longer nylon one.

Wow, it's amazing how many rockets get built when you retire.*

Here's a quick shot of a very rapid build of the relatively recent Mini Honest John release from Estes. Being a obsessive scale type there was simply no way the absurdly inaccurate "US MILITARY" decal was going to be used, so I went looking for alternate schemes. Google favored me with a great shot of a development round of the beastie that could be completed with black decal film. I've attached the reference photo and a peek at the finished model. (I may yet hit it with a dullcoat.)

The launch lug and motor hook were omitted and the model will launch using a simple fixed-head piston launcher.

I had NO idea that I would get this bored this quickly, so consider this fair warning to those of you considering an exit from the ranks of the employed. Had I known I might have toiled away in the mines for a few more weeks.

Here's my Estes Honest John (#1919).




I built this rocket in the 1980's. The paint was supplied to me by a friend in the Army National Guard.

Currently, this rocket is on loan to a math teacher, Mr. Powers in the Hidden Valley School District, Grants Pass, Oregon to display in his classroom. I also gave him a built Estes Yellow Jacket to display.

Ive got a mini honest john from estes, wasnt able to get the right color paint but the dark green isnt that bad IMO.

Here is my mini I have had one flight with it so far.

Madcow 2.6" Fiber Glass. 29mm MMT, Doghouse Rocketry Rail Buttons and Stand off, Aeropack retainer.
Done in Desert Tan, minus the canards, the thinking was this is an updated version for use in the Gulf war.

Flies great! So far: G131 Smokey Sam and an H133 Blue Streak Probably get a G126 White Thunder next

Another Ebay bird, this one was picked up as an afterthought with several other Estes birds. I've flown it once, but it's since been retired due to old age fragility.
