My 1/2-scale Little John. Motor was a CTI K2045. Demolished the blast deflector and left a sizable crater under the launcher!

I just got home from church. I've made it a habit to check the new posts in the gallery section when I get home...as lunch heats up.

And standing guard, ever ready to defend the Adirondacks from any invading army, is...the Little John!

(Finally finished -and deployed at the front- this afternoon.)

I have an 11.5" diameter Little John. It's not painted scale and was stretched a bit for the last flight, but it still counts as a LJ in my book. So far it has flown on...

Flight 1: EX 98/15000 N4000 Blue (3400')
Flight 2: EX 6" 27,000Ns O3400 Blue (5700')
Flight 2: (3) 75/7600 EX M2500 Yellow (6300')
Flight 4: EX 6" 50,000Ns P7000 White (15,100')

I have a Green 50,000Ns P mixed and ready for the next flight sometime this winter. I attached a few pics.

Is that a scratch or a kit?

Welcome to the Scale (MGR-3) Little John Gallery on TRF.

This gallery showcases the MGR-3 Little John and those rockets derived from it. Particularly appropriate in this thread are the following:

Estes: Little John: #0819
Madcow: Little John (2.6"): K-101
Madcow: Little John (4"): K-142
Madcow: Little John Rocket (4") FG: K-157
Thrustline: Little John: TACL-020

as well as any upscales, downscales, clones, kitbashes or other derivative works. Even Goonies qualify!

Carried on the XM34 rocket launcher, it could carry either nuclear or conventional warheads. It was primarily intended for use in airborne assault operations and to complement the heavier, self-propelled Honest John rocket systems. Development of the missile was started at Army’s Rocket and Guided Missile Agency laboratory at Huntsville, Alabama, the Redstone Arsenal, in June 1955. In June 1956, the first launch of the XM47 Little John occurred. The Littlejohn was delivered to the field in November 1961 and remained in the Army weapons inventory until August 1969.

It was a fin-stabilized field artillery rocket that followed a ballistic trajectory to ground targets. The rocket XM51 consisted of a warhead, a rocket motor assembly, and an igniter assembly. The components were shipped in separate containers and assembled by the user.

The Littlejohn differs from the Honest John in not only its size but how it is stabilized in flight. The flight of the Honest John is stabilized by a spin that is imparted to the rocket by spin rockets after the round leaves the launcher. The Littlejohn rocket flight is stabilized by applying spin to the rocket while on the launcher, just before firing. This manual method of stabilization was called "spin-on-straight-rail" (SOSR). The system was maufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company.

The missile and launcher system were light enough to be easily transported by helicopters and other aircraft or towed by a vehicle. The Phase II Littlejohn weapon system was initially deployed with the 1st Missile Battalion, 157th Field Artillery in Okinawa, Japan.

The missile was retired beginning in July, 1967, with the final missile removed from inventory in 1970. Five hundred missiles were produced during the life of the weapon program

Madcow 4" cardboard version (K-142), 38mm mount. Found I had to add about 260gm of weight to the back side of the eyebolt to get the CG right.

How far forward are the fins from the tail? Can't find anything in the instructions that says where to place them. And pretty much every picture I have found shows them a little forward.

According to Alway's drawing in "Fourteen US Army Missiles of the Cold War", the fins on the actual missile are .9" from the base.

Do you have access to the drawing? I don't have his books yet and can't find its drawing on the web. Tax money for rocket books, woohoo! Being AR and wanting scale rockets is a PITA!
