After constant posts on the original TRF, I decided the Deuce would be a good rocket to upscale. First, I ordered a couple, one to build and one for part dimensions for scale up. The Tres had just become available so I added a couple to the order for the same reason. The Deuce is still flyable.

Then I built the upscale, at first just using 1.4" plywood for the fins. After the first flight shred, I rebuilt the booster, laminating the plywood with 1/32" G10 both sides. https://www.rocketryforumarchive.com/showthread.php?t=6010
After 14 flights, the booster body tube was so ragged it was time to replace the LOC tubes. I used the original Blue Tube and it's still going strong. The rebuild is here: https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?t=4380 The rebuild includes a camera pod mounted to the base between the motors. It takes excellant 720p video which I have posted to Youtube along with the ground view of most of the flights.

The next year, I built a pair of 24 mm Deuces, one is still flyable.

Here's mine. It's been around quite a while and it's getting kind of beat up but still flies great. Especially on Quest C6-5s. :)

Here's mine.

It doesn't look nearly as good now.

It's a little beat up with a few dings in the fins.

I had to replace the top half of the body tube after it got crunched in an odd landing. It was coming down on a streamer (windy day) and the body was parallel to the ground and at the last second it flipped up and landed tube first on hard packed ground.

You can probably see in the third photo that the fins are canted slightly to give it a spin. On a calm day you get a twin spiral smoke trail.

[blink]Hey, where'd it go???

That's the idea :D

I've never put any electronics in it or anything, but it sims at >60G off the pad on the D24s, and around 30-40G throughout most of the burn. It gets pretty high too. I use an enormous streamer for recovery, since I don't think I'd ever get it back on the stock chute.

Here are a couple of pics of Deuces on D13s:

My reinforced (1 layer of 1/2oz glass, tip to tip) Deuce (this has also flown on D24s - it's had perhaps 15 flights, of which probably 10 are on the AT 18mm reloads):

So, is the total angle between the two motors 30 degrees?

CJL, are the smoky motors in your Deuce Smoky Sams or Blackjacks?

Those were CTI Pro54-4g K530SS motors.

Yep, 15 degrees each
On both cjl's and my 54mm versions, we had to reduce the angle to accommodate longer motors. At 15 deg, the motors would be limited to 2 grain. On mine, the angle is about 11 deg and I can use up to 4 grain motors (longer if I hang them out the back).

True. Mine is around 9-10 degrees if i remember right, and I also made some motor mount placement changes to allow for up to 6 grain motors (I can fit the AT 2560 or CTI 6g cases, but they are the absolute limit)

Since Carl T doesn't post much here anymore, I don't think he'll mind.

These pics are from NARAM 45.

Hey, Jim, remember that last pic?

I remember those flights well! That was my first (and only) NARAM. I'm in the last pic as well. :)
