Hi,

Does anyone have temperature data that has been measured from a rocket in flight? I am looking for the temperature the outside of a motor mount tube can reach. This is not a supersonic flight so I'm not so concerned about aerodynamic affects but the temperature due to the motor burn. I'm specifically looking for a 54mm K motor. Thanks,

Doug

I believe HPR motors are required to stay below 220C case temperature by NFPA.

Yes, but the test conditions aren't specified. Compare a motor run in a test stand with not even a motor mount tube around it to one in a motor mount tube. Or in a motor mount with an air gap to the surrounding airframe. Or worse, with the gap filled with polyurethane foam.

Each will produce a different temperature/time history.

Tony (tfish) did some testing. here is one of his videos.

Sure, but it was hard to tell how precisely the OP needed the answer. I doubt there's a huge difference between static firing and flight, and to the extent there is, one rocket may not be much like another anyway.

This is great info, Thanks. I'm wanting to mold a custom motor retainer and I think it is worth a try. The material I'm considering has a max temperature of 275F but it should be OK. Thanks again Tony and Tim.
