I always thought those ads popped up because it was someplace that you visited before or similar sites. I always get ads for Sears and Chewy because these are sites I frequent besides TRF, therefore they want to inform you of deals or other specials. So I think the reason you are seeing some of these ads because you visted a similar site or the site was somehow connected to a site you visited in the past?

They certainly key into things you have searched for but there are also unrelated advertisements

Agreed - even though I still get ads as a supporting member when I’m logged in and have ad blocking turned off.

I haven't been looking for any (insert foreigner) dating sites, and certainly not for manga, hentai or any other kind of Japanese animated or drawing websites.

I get ads for Chewy too. But it's not because I ever shopped there. It's because after I flew my monkey in my rocket, I Googled "GoDog Crazy Tugs Monkey" to find out what other chew toys they might make and if any of those might make a good rocket pilot. For the next month, I got all kinds of ads for chew toys and websites like Chewy that sell chew toys, and I don't even have dog!

The chew toy ads replaced most of the lady underwear ads I was getting after my wife requested a specific sports-type bra for hiking. After I did a search for that bra, my web surfing was littered with ads featuring women in their underwear! I'm not going to say I didn't like it, but it was kind of distracting. So after Googling the monkey thing, all the ladies in their fancy undies were replaced by monkey-shaped chew toys.

Now it seems like the only site trying to sell me women's clothing is Facebook. Mostly they try to get me to buy women's bathing suits from Target. But occasionally they try to sell me yoga pants or other workout clothes, with an occasional sexy lingerie ad thrown for fun. For awhile, they were also serving me up ads for plus-size women's clothing! This is not based on anything I have ever shopped for or Googled, so it must be based on my psychometric profile or other info that leads them to think I might like to dress up as a chubby girl! I've heard Facebook knows us better than we know ourselves, so i'm considering giving a try!

Do NOT log into a Gxxgle account and use Duck Duck Go as the preferred search engine. Following each search press the “data flush” button. Big Brother tracks your phone via Gxxgle Maps if you’re signed into an account.

The only ad I allow from Gxxgle ads is for Rogue Fitness as I have purchased from them...barbells, plates, weightlifting shoes, etc.

So, now that I had to Google what that is, will I start to get ads for it?

Amazing how clearing out cookies and cache has affected my computer. Having to log into all my old haunts again (and remembering their passwords) is a PITA (I think that the file remembering passwords got nuked too). The straw that broke the camel's back was all the Youtube ads that I was suddenly getting in Russian. I finally broke down and downloaded ABP. Big change, and I have to say I like it.

One way to stop getting ads related to past searches is to purge your browser's cookie cache. If using FF or one it's clones you can change settings in the Privacy section to do this when you close your browser.

Another type of cookie called a "Flash Cookie" a.k.a Local Shared Objects (LSO), is harder to remove. Thankfully there are plug-ins to deal with these. Just search FF addons for flash cookie or LSO.

I think I might have cracked it... I just posted a reply to someone, and I used the phrase "Rocket Porn"... That sounds like it could be the title of some kind of Japanese Manga series.

    Clearing cache and cookies helps.

And I'll let Admin know so the ad settings can be tweaked better. Also, if you can right click for the ad address, and post in the thread/post about it, it will help Admin to get to the ad.
    Hi,

Not to the soggy blanket, but the 'X' in the ads doesn't really do much. I spent a session, turning them all "off" one day.. (click the X, then either click 'Ad not relevant to me' or 'Seen this ad multiple times') they eventually come back.

For me, my experience, has been that I get about 10 different ads, and rotate thru.. They all seem to be from whatever campaign is being pushed thru Google at the time.. Rarely do they change, always the same dozen or so ads. About 4-6 times a year, they do seem to change (seasonal change?) to a new set that rotates thru.. Are they relevant to me? Not in the least! I've just become blind to them...

I must admit, I usually surf TRF here at work, and rarely use the I-net for anything else..

I don't use any blockers. I want to see (if I can) what people complain about. But honestly, there aren't that many ads here (literally one at the top, and one at the bottom). I suspect that Adblocker is "counting" the signatures of forum members who have links to other websites included in them as "ads." That's the only way I can think of to get a number that high.

John, It might also be the ads you see when you are 'not logged in' (ones at that appear in-between posts) or maybe that they are appearing, but the 'you are logged in' switch hides them for you..

If you are not logged in there are more ads. I stay logged in. And I have the ability to turn off the ads, but keep them on so I can monitor things. I also test via app on phone and iPad. You can have my ads, they are for dolls and fabric (I sew for dolls for my granddaughters).

You think dating sites were bad?
How about women who barely have any clothing on?
have to watch out for those bad ads.
    Jeez, the people these days!
Have to look out for my kids to make sure they don't see any of that crap.
    Only saw once, though.
