Great info. Why do we "need" them? We use them on aircraft to break pressure along the airframe to give ordinance a chance to separate and drop away from the aircraft. The F-15 has two rear mounted VGs so the aft AIM-7s don't "fly" back in to the aircraft.

The chines on the SR-71 and F-18 are VGs creating a cyclonic flow to the vertical stabs and rudders for directional authority at increase angles of attach such as landing/takeoff or high bank maneuvering. The Hornet uses additional VGs on top in line with the stabs too.
F-1 cars now look like porcupines with all of the aero components stuck to those rockets.
Now that I think about it, wonder if my gas mileage will increase if I put VGs on my Cherokee and camper???
