With regard to the little D-engine-with-fins in the attached pic, I'm trying to decide whether to put the launch lug on a 5mm standoff or to just put a 5mm deep groove in the nose. Not worried about the cosmetics as much as the various effects on stability and drag. Your thoughts guys/gals?IMG_20180319_134405183.jpg

Lugs with standoffs.

No reason to screw around, and you don’t want to have to worry about keeping the nose perfectly aligned with the lugs.

you could mount one lug on the fin at the bottom and one on the widest part of the nose at the top, without any standoffs. But this also requires the nose lug to line up with the fin lug. Appearance-wise I think two stand-off lugs on the body would look better, but that is personal preference.

also, you can glue a lug within a carved groove in the nose, and then re-shape the nose to fill in the groove with wood filler, or spackle, cut the lug ends to match the nose contour and sand down the filler to match the original nose shape. You will have elliptic holes where the lug pokes out at the top and bottom, but should still look pretty cool. Might need to harden with some CA after shaping.

You could decorate a launch lug with the flag of Mexico, and mount that on a standoff.
Then you would have a Mexican Standoff launch lug.
