I have a PML 3" Bullpup I want to paint, but I was thinking of going with a semi gloss or matte spray paint. How are the techniques different to obtain nice results?

I know when I'm spraying gloss it light coats and then gradually build up the finish and then a little heavier to get that "wet" look flow.

How would the technique differ using a semi gloss or matte. It's obvious you're not going to try and "wet" the paint right??

I just want a more military scaled look if you know what I mean and matte and semi gloss seem more forgiving.

Thanks

Whichever you are spraying, they should all be layed down in fully wetted coats. With gloss, it is best to spray to just the point before it starts to sag.

The only paints I know of that are 'dry coated' are metallics and chrome finishes.

Just to CLARIFY, I thought you start with gloss for base coats, put on decals, overcoat decals with gloss, then add the final top coat(s) of desired sheen, semi-gloss or matte, right? Just to be totally CLEAR about the process. :)

I used a really nice Krylon combination last year and the rocket turned out great. I used the Krylon camo matte paints as my base which are really matte and dry. The dryness is a bit of a problem as simple finger prints show up as well as it is prone to scratches. However I cleared it with the Krylon matte clear which is matte but has a more durable finish more like a semi, so it does not appear as matte. The paint is also very forgiving and easy to work with, just watch the runs.

Here is a link to the results, this is all paint no decals. https://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?140664-MAC-BlackFly-build-thread&p=1719191#post1719191

Great results! What did you use to mask that paint job?
