I am in the process of machining a 38mm aluminum retainer. I do not know the width (ie, height, if the casing is standing upright, nozzle end down) ,of the 38mm dms thrust ring, however. Anyone have this information handy?

Yes, thanks. Scaling off of that, it looks like it might be around 0.375", or a few thousanths under. The PAPER thrust ring listed on RCS is 0.368" long. I think I'm going to design for 0.375".

0.375" sounds right. The DMS motors are interchangeable with the Aerotech and CTI reloadable systems, and the CTI spec for the 38mm thrust ring is 0.375".
