They'd probably use their tested RDS-220 Tsar Bomba design but with a natural or depleted uranium case to raise the yield from 50 MT to 100MT instead of the lead case as used in the 1961 test. However, on the Cobalt-60 thing, call me skeptical.

Pentagon Document Confirms Existence of Russian Doomsday Torpedo
Kanyon is designed to wipe out the enemy’s coastlines and make them unlivable for generations

Kanyon is reportedly a very long range autonomous underwater vehicle that has a range 6,200 miles, a maximum depth of 3,280 feet, and a speed of 100 knots according to claims in leaked Russian documents.

But what really makes Kanyon nightmare fuel is the drone torpedo's payload: a 100-megaton thermonuclear weapon.

Kanyon is designed to attack coastal areas, destroying cities, naval bases, and ports. The mega-bomb would also generate an artificial tsunami that would surge inland, spreading radioactive contamination with the advancing water. To make matters worse there are reports the warhead is “salted” with the radioactive isotope Cobalt-60. Contaminated areas would be off-limits to humanity for up to 100 years.

Kanyon is designed to get around American ballistic missile defenses, primarily the Ground-Based Interceptor missiles based in Alaska and California.

The Russian Navy is testing Kanyon from a Sarov-class Russian Navy submarine.

It doesn't matter much how big or destructive the devices are that they have, if one goes off, the world will be a mess anyway.

Andrei Sakharov is probably puking in his grave and Teller is probably laughing. If this is true it forebodes that the Russian hierarchy is still paranoid as Hades. I don't know how they could keep up a 100knot speed and remain undetected. If seems to me that
would be a pretty noisey device. If a mothership were used, it would have to remain undetected to get close enough to launch so the warning time is less. The other thing is the Kanyon device might have counter-measures of some kind if it detects something coming in to "kill it", it just blows right then and there and cause a radioactive tidal wave (besides decimating natural sea life) to do what damage it could to an adversary from off shore. The key to subvert would be to detect and blow up with whatever
before the device could start the arming and detonation cycle. As most know, everything must be working perfectly and the alignment of all the bomb components must be maintained in order for it to go critical and start the thermonuclear reaction.

This is somewhat disturbing if true and if you ask me perverted in going with such a high yield. Techinically the yield could be made higher than 100mt but a lot of the energy would simply be expended out into space. Point of diminishing returns mind you
but still enough to create a lot of havoc down here. Kurt

To even consider 100 knots, it’s have to be foiled...and that size, any kind of weather is gonna be an issue.

Im not buying it.

A 100-knot torpedo isn't that exotic. The Russians have had a 200-knot torpedo for 40+ years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA-111_Shkval

It works by the principle of supercavitation--creating a bubble of air around the torpedo body to travel at high speeds. Noisy as can be, but by the time you hear it, it's too late to get out of the way.

Squall isn't doing 100 for 6000mi a half mile down. It also isn't 5ft dia x 80ft long.

Some of these things can be true, but likely not all of them at once. Something that loud coming across an ocean for 15hrs is going to attract some serious attention.

cobalt thorium G....................

…If you take, say, fifty H-bombs in the hundred megaton range and jacket them with cobalt thorium G, when they are exploded they will produce a doomsday shroud. A lethal cloud of radioactivity which will encircle the earth for ninety three years!”
